Evolution Discussion

For those of you that are aware of the NG Evolution threads, you'll probably also know that discussion in Mk II isn't encouraged - the reasons for this being:

1) So users posting ideas don't have to scan through too many pages to see if their idea has already been suggested.
2) So liljim doesn't have to spend a lot of time reading to get to the suggestions.

Since a lot of you obviously like to bounce ideas back and forth, this thread has been created for that purpose. Post your initial ideas here, discuss them with anybody who is interested, and then when/if you feel that you have a distilled version of an original, useful, idea, post it in the Evolution thread.

Please always check the latest Evolution thread (particularly the first post) for a list of rejected/implemented/under consideration ideas before you add your suggestion.

I've always used it to mean 'Mark II', as in, second edition. I guess I could have used 'V2' but for some reason I prefer 'Mk II'.

Sorry about the discussing in the other thread, I didn't realise we weren't allowed to do it and I was just trying to help people out by giving them a quicker response as to why certain suggestions wouldn't work, but now we have this thread for that purpose.

A small sugestion i thought i might post in here before i do so in the other thread, just to get some feedback.

I suggest that liljim (or who ever) get rid of the time link (see picture) i pisses me off. I constantly click it by accident, when going for the link next to it, and nobody cares about it anyway so i can't see why we need it at all !

Seconded, its there for aesthetic value only, and quite frankly, its a pain in the arse. If you dont delete it, atleast move it to a different location, somewhere we wont constantly click it.

Nice addition, Denvish.

I like the idea to show your BA next to you level and posts and such. This site is mainly for flashes, the whole site started with the flashes and without them this site wouldn't have much. I don't think the good flash artists get enough "respect", with a low post count and level they look like anyone else in the forums.
I don't see why not, I don't think it should be too hard, it's not like it would take that much space either. If one wouldn't have a BA, it could be blank and look like it does today.
If you don't like the idea, give reasons.

I can't see the problem, but it seems like alot of people have trouble with it. If anything, I suggest to move it, pehaps like so:

I personally think it is a good addition as it helps the new people to the site understand the time indexes around NG, especially if they don't fully understand time zones. I do agree it could be placed on the page a little better, but I haven't had any problems with it so far.

Aye, that would be better, also perhaps they could add the timezone time thingy in as well so it says "GMT -4:00", as part of the text that creates the link, just so the actual timezone is clearer as "Eastern Daylight Time" doesn't mean anything to me without me actually having to click the link myself and seeing how far it is behind GMT.

Seriously people, aren't any of you able to use your mice properly. I'm always using the "Go back to topic list" link and haven't clicked the new "Eastern Daylight Time" link once. Do you want all the buttons to be spaced 100 miles apart or something? Sorry to sound harsh, but come on, there are links next to eachother all over the place and you don't complain about them.

Much as I'd like to take credit, it was -Superman-'s idea, check the last page of the Evolution thread. I really should have credited him in the initial post for the idea.

I haven't actually clicked the timezone link myself, but it's been commented on in the Flash forum too. However, I think that within a week, most users will have got used to the new layout, so I personally don't really think it's worth suggesting. Up to you guys, though.

As a Flasher myself, I do agree that authors should have some kind of 'mark' on the BBS that shows their contribution to the portal. I don't really know whether liljim will consider it worthwhile though, but I certainly think it's worth adding to the Evolution thread.

Please bear in mind that although some of the rules of the Evolution thread don't apply in this topic, this one definitely does: 2) DO NOT SPAM OR WHINE. This is not the place for you to complain about things you don’t like about NG, just for constructive advice and ideas for the future.

I have a trivial suggestion. I am not going through 2 threads to find if the ideas was suggested. But a drop down menu for username in review, post message and grounds gold menu so login out out of main and alts would be easier.

I had two suggestions in the last thread that never were really given a yes/no response by liljim/any mods, and perhaps no response from them whatsoever. So, rather than clog up the other thread with a repeat of pre-discussed ideas, I thought I should discuss it here.

One idea was to revamp the whistle levels. I think that if it were easier to gain levels (since once you get to silver, you're stuck there), then more people would be motivated to report abuse. I think this could be done by adding whistle levels between silver and diety.

My other idea is to add a "preview post" option. It would help cut down on botched image posts by showing if it worked or not, it would show if a link worked, and, unlike the "edit post" option that's been turned down, people would not be able to go back and change their posts.

Im not trying to complain or annoy anybody, but I just want to know does anyone know on?
Is this at the end of a long list of prioritys? Or simply just gonna set it aside until the new office building is taken care of? Did someone post something related to these lists that I am unaware of?

I think the demand for that feature is so low (the number of NG visitors visiting the BBS is a fraction of the total visitors, and the number of statwhores is even lower) that it's definitely not high on the list of priorities.
I really don't envy James, I'd hate to see his to-do list.

I don't see a need to make it bigger, the text is good as it is.

just so the actual timezone is clearer as "Eastern Daylight Time" doesn't mean anything to me without me actually having to click the link myself and seeing how far it is behind GMT.

Maybe not to you and alot of people, but that's is what the link is for. If you want to know more about what GMT is, you click the link.

Or if you want to go back to the forum, you could click it by accident. It's the same "problem" either way.

Another idea would be to remove the link from the actual threads and only have it in the thread listings. That should solve the problem with clumsy clicking, and still leave the link for information.

I agree, I don't know why that much people have problem with two links beside each other all of a sudden, but since they have I try to come up with ideas to help solve the so called problem.

It's a slower version of what you end up doing in chat. Answering the same 25 questions about accounts, and the odd question about this and that. Lots of people looking for a link to movies or cheats to games.

Just something that's came up in another thread has made me think.

On the BBS we have the buttons so that we can set up a hyperlink, bold text etc. without having to know the HTML code required to do so.

But when it comes to setting up your BBS signature from your Grounds Gold menu, the buttons aren't there, so you have to know the HTML code yourself.

Not everyone knows the HTML code in order to do so, so there's often people asking how to set up hyperlink's within this forum.

So how about having the buttons that are in the BBS 'Post a message!' screen within the Edit your BBS Signature screen as well? Like in the picture below.

That way people won't need to ask how to do it, as they'll have the buttons there already, to do the coding for them.

I'm just wondering what everyone else thinks about this?
