Surpsing depth for a flash fighter using 3 buttons
When I first started this game, I was blown away by the art, but wasn't terribly impressed with the game itself.
I had picked Salad Fingers the first time around... it was mainly a mash fest, and I was disappointed in that regard. But perhaps its just that I hadn't learned SF that well... because when I picked Alien Hominid, I soon realized that there were a ton of moves, useful and unique ones, for each character. It's just that you have to cycle through the first few moves to get to the ones down the line. If you wanted the short range blaster shot, you had to do the bite attacks and grenade throw first.
This adds an interesting element to the game. If you see the opponent throwing many fierce moves, you have to wonder if they're trying to get to that move that can reach you at the end... or if they're just psyching you out, and trying to position you into a trap for a combo of light moves or such.
So the game ends up being almost as nuanced as a venerable fighter such as Street Fighter... it's just that you don't have to do a bunch of silly button combination presses to get the different moves.
For this reason alone, I give the game a perfect score. The art and such doesn't hurt ;)
