Reviews for "Super Smash Flash"

OMG NOSTALGIC (:

I remember playing this game back around 2009, and thinking it was amazing. I remember coming home from school and going onto Newgrounds to play this game. But looking at it outside the glass of nostalgia, this game is pretty bad and an absolute pain to come back to today.

I need to point this out first: The controls. O is jump, and P is attack. That'd be fine if the controls used WASD, but they don't. They use the arrow keys for some reason. Having your hands that close together just feels awkward. But it's not the worst it could be. It could be IJKL.

The visuals of this game I really enjoy. All of this effort was put into making this game as faithful a Smash Bros. experience as possible, and I can commend it for that. I especially like the menus, they're like the Super Smash Bros. Melee menus but flash-ified if that makes any sense. The character sprites however clash with each-other a bit (you can really tell which characters had custom sprites made for them and which didn't), but it's not a huge deal.

The character roster is weird, but I kinda like it for the most part. There are inclusions here which I'm baffled didn't make it into the actual Smash games, like Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog or Crono from Chrono Trigger. But there's also a few odd inclusions. Naruto (from Naruto) and Inuyasha (fron Inuyasha) are two characters that aren't from gaming, but rather anime. I'm fine with their inclusion, but it struck as kinda odd to me. Blade and Blue are two Sonic fan characters that never shown up in any Sonic the Hedgehog game. Their inclusion is strange, but acceptable I guess. And then there's Mr. Incredible, who's inclusion is so ridiculous it's down right laughable.

The main reason why I think this game is hard to come back to today is the actual GAME portion.

Character momentum is terrible, with your character slipping and sliding all around, feeling like you're on ice all the time. But when you're going at full speed on the ground and turn around, you immediately turn without any kind of weight. It just feels unnatural.

The way this game handles damage and character knockback is atrocious. You could have 0 damage, get hit once and you've somehow got 187 damage. And that's not accounting for if you get flung off the stage, which can also be done from 0 damage across the stage. For stages that have waves of enemies, taking them down can be near impossible. Even on the easiest difficulties it's a pain.

Items range from completely useless to literal win buttons. If you hit somebody with a bomb, they're as good as dead due to how knockback works.

The fact that Cleod-9 made this when they were 16 is honestly an amazing feet, especially at the time when most game creation tools were in their infancy. But looking at it today, it's pretty rough and not worth playing unless you feel like ruining your nostalgic memories of it.

Here's my final verdict: I don't recommend playing this game, but it has its place in history. If you want a good Super Smash Flash experience, I highly recommend the sequel.

great game

MEMORIES

It's one of my childhood flash games, I found it in a website. It was the first time I ever heard about Super Smash Bros, but now I understand, this game doesn't count as an actual SSB game; but it's still my childhood game.
