A gem within an exhausted genre
The metal slug graphics are perfect for this game with it's simple 2-D side scrolling style. A simple few additions would add just enough flavor to make this a game that could have been a legitimate arcade platform or sold for a PS1. A transition by walking from one scene to another after clearing a scene would lend a sense of accomplishment. The constant popping of the pistol grew very old after rattling off 100-200 shots on a higher level. The sound quality was very good overall but there's a need for some variation. The chance to include an alternate character with slightly different abilities or weapons (ie. faster but weaker, slower but stronger, etc...) would add an intriguing element. Part of the charm of this game is its simplicity but I imagine additional weapons and an appropriate reworking of the enemy power levels could add some much needed depth. The knife is nearly worthless except for racking up additional points on the early levels. For a newgrounds game this is an exceptional effort with surprising replay value... I pray for a revamped sequel.
