People like to talk shit about 'b', but they miss the point. the animation may be.... nonexistant, but that's precisely the point. NG was created for (allegedly) quality work, but 'b' and its fame are a gleaming example that flashy motion or explosions do not necessarily make good work (or art, whatever). People see this and say "I could do better than that!" and they try to and fail because they don't recognize that the lack of effort is what makes 'b' so powerful and evocative. People fail simply by trying; SBC certainly wasn't trying to outdo anyone when he made this.
Sure you could go and make some ballin' animations and FX in some gory, edgy, 2deep4me style but it will get lost in the sea of submissions; 'b' stands apart because it avoids dating itself through unnecessary tropes, allusions, or references. 'B' stands on its own through how absolutely effortless it was to create: there's no background, there's no sound, there's only one color, the B isn't in the center of the frame. The only effort that seems to be put in was the changing of the B's color from the default black to red; that's all good work takes, one simple thing.
