A Trip Down Memory Lane...
Ah yes, Chrono Trigger. The game inevitably doomed to remain in the shadows of Final Fantasy in terms of an RPG, and fated to remain a back-seat to Dragonball in terms of Toriyama's works. Twas a very good game which did not see the recognition it deserved. Nevertheless, were here to criticize the actual flash and not the game, so I will take this time to immunize myself from all the Chrono Trigger fanboys who think anyone who doesn't give this a 10 should have their nads removed. First and foremost, using Chrono Trigger as the thematic center of your flash has little to do with this overall grade. Now then. The cinematography of this work is nothing short of grand. It is hard to do cinematic fight scenes in flash without resorting to cheap gimmicks (yes, im looking at you Stick Figures, bring it), and you made an excellent effort to keep this Flash's integrity intact. You made good use of the Chrono Trigger techniques without resorting to cheap cleches. The tension was well expressed and the overall mood of the flash was well conveyed. That said, this film still falls into a few pitholes which keep it from a perfect score. First of all, the artwork completely missed the target. Toriyama's characters in Chrono Trigger are all short, with large cartoony heads (take a look at early Dragonball artwork for a reference). You (or your artist) drew them more late-Dragonball Z style, with long, human bodies accompanying the cartoony heads. This would normally be a good thing for serious action, but the characters were designed to be short, the shift in styles makes the characters in your flash look silly and unnatural (particularly Marle and Crono). Hire someone who has a better understanding for Toriyama's work unless your not trying to keep with his art style. Secondly, the sound, quite frankly, doesn't express the tension of the movie. The MIDI of the battle theme is traditional and nostalgic, but ultimately, is forgettable because the audience is too wrapped up in the actual visual presentation. A good cinematic of this genre blends visual and audio components together to make for a more intense overall presentation. Overall, this is a excellent work, albeit a few gaps, work to fill these and you could take the crown as one of the best action oriented flash designers on Newgrounds.
