Ahhh finally another episode of “Retarded Animal Babies” by Dave! Where would we be without those, cute and perverted little cartoon animals? It’s great to see you’ve taken a little change in theme this time, and added more of a plot to it, I dread the day when RAB comes to an end…
First off, graphics. Excellent, simply excellent. There’s isn’t anything I could suggest here for improvement, I’m glad to see you’ve stuck with that same style throughout the whole of the RAB series – I just love the cartoon style of it, it gives the whole flash a very ‘slapstick’ feel to it and how those animals have no fingers, which is bizarre but it works for the flash because it gives the characters a nice soft toy feel. Also, I am happy to see that whilst you have used the exact same style of graphics you have developed it a bit, something that only helps the flash more. For example, in this RAB you created a more detailed environment, showing the sky and space, and also all those funny signs and the scene of the downtown area with all the buildings and roads. It really seems to me as if you have taken out the limitations and taken this flash further than just that hilly background we see in most RAB episodes, you’ve taken it into another area which is great.
Sounds, next. Like graphics this is absolutely perfect and there’s nothing at all that I can suggest here. Once again, like all of these Retarded Animal Babies episodes I adore that cute background music to the flash, it’s a classic in my book and also this makes the flash seem devious – from a false impression you think this is cute and happy, but that’s not so much the case! The most impressive thing of all though, is the voice acting of RAB. I love the way the voices of each animal differs, the high pitched voice of the hamster especially makes me smile. I feel as if you actually crafted the animals with care, you gave them each an interesting character and a different personality, this is why I feel I can relate to the flash a whole lot more. Finally, on this matter it was good to see the voice acting for Matt Groening, you made him sound evil and devious, and I bet that the voice you made for him is pretty much accurate :). The subtitles that appear at the bottom of the screen is also useful too unless you can’t hear very well, because at some times it’s a little difficult to pick out what the animal’s are saying because of their squeaky accents.
Content, like many of the other RABs; is nothing short of the absolute HEART of this flash. I think it’s fair to say that in terms of the best cartoons on the whole of Newgrounds (and perhaps the internet), this really is the cream of the crop outside and inside of the NG. Humour was a key aspect of this flash and RAB delivers it in bundles, I found this episode a lot more funny than some of the others. There was also a lot more action in this so it gave the flash a very ‘slapstick’ feeling to it; I appreciate the slight change of pace because I was pleased you made an interesting and funny flash based on St Patrick’s day, because of this you managed to create an interesting link between luring women and gold – therefore leading onto St Patrick’s day, the way you set this out was very clever. I felt because of this that this RAB had a better purpose that some of the other episodes, it felt like it was GOING somewhere more, it had a lot more action and therefore a flash, I am pleased to say that this finally feels like a story to me rather than just a funny episode. You also included some more bizarre things which actually helped the flash, such as the belief that “God hates donkeys” and the aliens, I liked how you managed to change the whole environment when the animals put on those sunglasses, those signs were funny!
Overall another excellent addition to the RAB series and definitely the best one so far. I think it’s safe to say, that when it comes to cartoons on NG; RAB is the king. Well done :)
