A Classic in Every Sense.
I really adore this game. It has been an internet favorite for a wide spectrum of ages, and just playing it now brings back waves of nostalgia. My friends and I would spend what seemed like hours beating the crap out of the poor buddy with grenades, missiles, fire hoses, and various other mischievous items.
This is where I think this game differentiates itself from the other "torture" games found on this site and others. Call me crazy, but I do not enjoy those games; I believe they foster desensitization to violence and a diminished empathy for our fellow human beings.
So why do I enjoy this game so much? For one, the violence is purely comical, even with the blood and gore settings, which release copious quantities of blood from our Buddy. He never is really injured, the most that happens to him is he becomes dazed and lies on the ground for some time. The quality that separates this game from the other torture games is the fact that, if you want to, you can actually be nice to the buddy.
I normally just blow the living daylights out of the Buddy as soon as i can. However, this time, I decided to see what would happen if I was nice to him. I played catch with him, bought a radio, and had him dance along to the music. And surprisingly, after a few minutes, he gave me $150 because he was "so happy"! I was thoroughly surprised by this, and found it gratifying, although he is little more than lines of code.
Do I recommended taking this path? No. It is mind numbingly boring building up his happiness, and it certainly more fun to whack him with bowling balls. I just thought that pointing out that specific aspect of the game really shows how it is unique. It is silly at worst, the violence is nothing to be concerned about, and is a true newgrounds classic that will be enjoyed by kids young and old for years to come.
