wow
Very interesting. I skimmed through the reviews and saw alot of people confused about the ending. One theory is that the Smilers have such little remorse, find so much joy in what they're doing, and are so twisted in mentality that they celebrate what they've just done in the most primal/vulgar way possible.
I see alot of people taking this as a view of government. But if you look closely at the way the Smilers are dressed, they appear to be "popular" teenagers. I took this as a metaphor for how they treat those who do not or will not conform to their standards...they intentionally break down the 'less popular' individuals and return to (what is most likely a hyperbole for) their lives and tendencies.
I wonder if this was influenced by Aldous Huxley in any way?
