I got the feel that it was kind of like a 'non-conforming' thing. As in, just because everyone else is smiling, laughing, and dancing like robots (like you see in the short). Stand out, and people will attack you, but no matter how much they pummel you, whether physically or psychologically, you should hold out, never conforming. Just like our little spike-man. His attempt at a smile was the trying to conform, but he realized he couldn't do it, so he stopped trying, and he was content with dying as an individual, instead of living like a zombie.
