Everything

It had everything; romance, comedy, social tragedy... ahem, and the animation was undoubtably original and consistent. Plus it's cute, so that's a large amount of popularity right there :)
And come on, with the flaming, it's not hurting anyone by existing, and it's certainly plain that the movie is widely appreciated. Also, I think the music might be Korean, not "Jap", but I don't know any more than anyone.
