nice looking tut, easy to follow, nice explination, my buddy needed help with flash,i told him to check this out, he said the item didnt work, i looked at it, theres nothing on item instance names or anything, you got the actionscript, but no instance, i dont do it this way, but im pretty sure thats whats missing, you should put the instance and everything for the item in the author notes, 10/10 anyway :D
Very helpful but 1 question..
My character can't pick up the ball i made o-o when you say "Go to the movieclip item and put this actionscript in it's menu" do you put that code into the menu on the ball? my character just walks right over the ball

evil, in 8, select the movie clip, then select "properties" by the top of the library. There should be a box that says <instance name>. change that.

Yeah, i saw the last tutorial because i knew nothing about codes. You did actually help me out quite a bit, and i thank ye for it. You did a good job editing this version to be more helpful too. If possible, i'd like to know more, so when you get a chance, i think ya should make a more in depth one. Good job.
