You missed something crucial!
The !jumping part in the more more help on the first code string means that if the person's jumping variable IS NOT True (1) then it will do whatever follows, if it IS true, the !jumping (not jumping) will not do what it was told due to the active variable of jumping. Basically, the two following contrast: (if !jumping) / (if jumping==TRUE (Or 1)).
I've coded DM Code (Not really widely used) and it's educated me thoroughly on code matters.
Just thought you'd like to know what !jumping is really supposed to mean.

REALLY good for starters with making a small game ^^ the two fixes i have for people is that the item slot instance name should be itemSlot1 not itemslot1 and the "panels" thing for most part is in the bottom toolbar saying Instance Name: <Instance Name> and you just type what he says there =) this is becuase it nly explains from the flash 5 way not flash 6 and onwards. I hope this helps all. I have one problem myself of everytime my character jumps he falls through, but its fine if he does not jump. plae pm with some help!
