Excellent, at least something is beginning to happen. I'd already prepared myself for the username lock down and changed my alias last week to one that I am prepared to stick with.
I like the new icon pic as well. Granted it isn't the most fearsome weapon the world has ever seen, but at least it shows a bit of variation from fists/blades. Personally I'd like to see more original and interesting icons, and this is a good start :).
Along with everyone else I can't wait for the redesign, but I'm prepared to wait as long as it takes. The day will come eventually, and I'll be here waiting for it.
