Around the time Mikey was losing his mind, ECW was promoting a...unique new purchase they'd made from WCW. WCW had released Jim Mitchell, who had a very short stint as the manager of Wrath and Mortis (who would become better known as Kanyon), under the name James Vandenburg. Apparently, Paul Heyman liked that character, and he sort of beefed it up, as Mitchell was portraying a Satanic Minister role (or, as it seemed to be suggested at times, that he was actually supposed to be the Devil made flesh or something, but for obvious reasons of credibility stretching, this aspect wasn't really promoted heavily, they just let Mitchell hint at it in his promos) later dubbed "The Sinister Minister" by announcer Joey Styles, Mitchell was just initially a creepy dude opening a lot of ECW shows, but soon made clear he wanted to recruit Raven.
However, that plan was abandoned (not sure why, could have been because of Raven's desire to leave the promotion, and how pissed Paul was that he was promoting a guy pretty heavily, and the dude was not giving his best). Anyway, the Minister was cutting a promo one night, about how he'd found a new disciple...and the camera panned down on Mikey, his hair now dyed red, laughing manically and setting things on fire. From here, Mikey and the Minister did a series of creepy vignettes involving fire, coffins, and various satanic imagery. Mikey also began to win more of his matches as well, but the pay off to this story was still months off, but it began on a fateful night in April.
Justin Credible, in order to win the ECW World Heavyweight title, threw down his half of the ECW World Tag Team Championship, vacating it, and ending the run of the Impact Players (and Lance Storm headed to WCW about a month later anyway). The belts remained vacant until a September super show at The Hammerstein Ballroom. Many teams entered, but perhaps the most surprising, was the newly formed Unholy Alliance of Mikey Whipwreck, and Yoshihiro Tajiri (who had also kind of been spinning his wheels since his ECW TV title reign had been ended by Rhino). Conventional wisdom heading into the tournament was that these guys were filler, and that it was either the team of Nova and Chetti, or Doring and Roadkill who were both good young teams always on the cusp of the tag titles who would walk out with the belts. But in the tournament finals, it would be Whipwreck and Tajiri shocking the world and walking out with the belts (9/1/00). They would lose the belts 14 days later to the Full Blooded Italians, the team of Guido and Mamaluke, and both teams would feud across ECW's remaining shows either for the belts (which the FBI lost to Danny Doring and Roadkill at the Massacre on 34th Street PPV, apparently I've remembered the show incorrectly in my past bios, as The FBI didn't fight Whipwreck and Tajiri that night. Whipwreck and Tajiri actually wrestled and defeated Tajiri's rival Super Crazy and his partner Kid Kash).
Whipwreck and Tajri worked ECW's last PPV, Guilty as Charged, defeating Kid Kash and Super Crazy, and The FBI in a three way dance to make them no. 1 contenders for Doring and Roadkill's tag team titles, the match never took place sadly, as ECW folded shortly after. Whipwreck went on to found his own promotion, and retire for a time, actually, in what was supposed to be his last match, Tajiri sent him a dozen roses, with a card that called Mikey "the best tag team partner I've ever had". That is one of the classiest stories I've ever heard in wrestling, a great ending, to a great tag team.
Or is it? ECW's One Night Stand PPV will almost surely see a reunion of The Unholy Alliance, now that all the players are together. If WWE is smart, they'll take advantage of the fact that Whipwreck and Tajiri were number 1 contenders to the tag titles, I know Danny Doring has worked Heat a few times for WWE, so I don't see why he can't be brought in (and am actually surprised he hasn't been announced yet), I'm sure Roadkill would love the payday as well. It'd certainly be the sort of tag team action we've been craving for quite some time now.
