I don't think I've ever played a Final Fantasy game where I've felt the need to grind to finish the main story.

Why would he feel betrayed? Those are the best ones, the early FF games are boring.

They are the best ones, to you.
He hated them, especially 9-10/2, 8 he can live with.

You don't quite understand how people can have opinions on something?
How does that make sense?
I don't care for the series.
I've played FF I, II, V, VII, VIII, Tactics and X.
I, II, V and VII were all boring to me, and I couldn't get into the groove of the battle system.
Tactics is a really good game, but one good game isn't going to get me to invest in the series.
I hate X, I should never need to whip out an FAQ to play an RPG for the first time, it came to a point where I was stuck underleveled and there wasn't any way to fix my predicament since that fucking retard level system kept me from progressing, since leveling up is ironically useless.

It doesn't make sense to say, "I don't know how anyone can like shooters and not like Halo", that's basically denying anyone's chance at having a different opinion, you may not have meant it like that, but that's why that line was really ignorant.

I mean, JRPGs are all fundamentally the same.

That's your opinion and I acknowledge it.
But I do not agree with nor respect it. That's too shallow.

But the Final Fantasy series seems to be one of the only series in JRPGs that tries anything particularly interesting with the storyline.

You can't say that for sure if you've never gotten into many other series.

Wait, he liked Final Fantasy VII and then didn't like the later ones?
I thought that when it came to hating the later entries in the series, people only did that when they thought it stopped being good at FFVI.

"Personal preference" really is an alien term to you huh?
Everything has to follow a general consensus?
Okay....

Anyways.
Tales of Updates

The Tales of Graces Official Site has been updated today with new character videos for Sophie, Malik Caesars and Pascal as well as three new wallpapers of Asbel Lhant, Sophie and Hubert Ozwell. The official site's video section has also been updated with streaming of the previously shown TV commercials of the game.

In Sophie's video, we see her wondering about why she is there and what she was doing before meeting Asbel. This is most probably at the beginning of the game, when Sophie supposedly helps Asbel fend off Fendel's troops. In Malik's video, we see him talking to Asbel. In Pascal's video, we see her and the rest examining a Fire Criath together with a new character, (fuurie). I've searched around, and the main romanization I saw for this name is "Fourier", with the name possibly based on this person's name.

What's retarded about the level system?

I thought it was pretty good. It gave an easy path for each character to follow, but it also allowed for customisation with the characters (e.g. you could put Lulu on Auron's path and have her little toys do ridiculous damage). It was a good middle ground.

It doesn't make sense to say, "I don't know how anyone can like shooters and not like Halo", that's basically denying anyone's chance at having a different opinion, you may not have meant it like that, but that's why that line was really ignorant.

I actually don't know how anyone can like shooters and not like Halo. Shooters are even more similar than JRPGs. Halo was a reasonably well crafted one.

That's your opinion and I acknowledge it.
But I do not agree with nor respect it. That's too shallow.

It is a genre that has seen very little innovation.

You can't say that for sure if you've never gotten into many other series.

Oh, I've gotten into a lot of other series.

I'm a huge JRPG fan.

They're my favourite type of game.

Okay....

It's just odd, is all. I don't know how one can like FFVII and feel betrayed by, say, FFX. I don't know what was so much different about the two that made him feel that way.

There's a huge difference between 7 and 10, I mean, do I need to explain them?
You yourself said that the Final Fantasy series is (debatable) notable for it's innovation.

The leveling system is useless to me, because the leveling up doesn't do anything, you have to customize your character from the ground up.
With that system, leveling up serves no purpose.
If it did, I would have gotten past Sin without direly requiring a level 3 key sphere.

At 11/27/09 10:32 PM, Mendou wrote: Yes

And that's fine.

I can understand not liking 8 very much. But why 9 in particular? it's not like they did anything drastic to the battle system, and the characters are interesting enough to feel involved in the games story. Really it was like a tribute to the older ones with it's setting and style.

He hated the story, the length of it (considering it's a 4 disc game) and the character designs.

But you're right, that's just my personal opinion.

And so, we grow.

I've never played one, so I can't really establish an opinion on them, but I can tell you that I don't care to play any of them.

However, you may have missed my peeve in that it wasn't the fact that you had to customize your character, it was the fact that that's where the development of the character solely came from, hence making leveling up nothing but a neat decoration.

Plus it was unpolished as it was the skill system (and lack of useful gain in leveling up) which forced me in one spot in FFX that eventually led me to just saying, "Fuck it I'm not playing this game".

Levelling up does the exact same thing as it does in any other RPG.

It makes your character stronger.

Only you get a bit of choice as to what way it makes your character stronger.

I don't see any problem with giving a bit of control to the player.

Even if you don't want any control, each character has their own set path they can go on. It's just a matter of going into the menu and moving them along this path when you get ability points.

Plus it was unpolished as it was the skill system (and lack of useful gain in leveling up) which forced me in one spot in FFX that eventually led me to just saying, "Fuck it I'm not playing this game".

I'll just tell you one thing:

My mother, who has never played video games before, has recently started playing this game.

She has had no trouble with the sphere grid.

Again, you misunderstand, dammit.
The customization wasn't the problem, it was the fact that leveling up did nothing.
They shouldn't have even put in a leveling system in the game if it was all customization. It was just about as much as a decoration as it was FFVIII.

My mother, who has never played video games before, has recently started playing this game.

She has had no trouble with the sphere grid.

I guess that's some sort of insult?
That's good for your mom, no really, I'm ecstatic for her. But I honestly, legitimately, don't give a fuck who didn't have problems with the sphere grid, because I wasn't one of those people. I really couldn't have helped that throughout all my battles, no enemy dropped a Lv 3 key sphere-ever-, which was what I needed more than anything.

I spent weeks looking for an enemy to find one off of, and to no avail. I spent almost a whole month, fighting enemies that my friends swore up and down dropped these things. Fuck Final Fantasy X, if you like it, fine, but it's garbage in my eyes.

What the hell do you mean 'leveling up does nothing'?

Levelling up does everything.

I really couldn't have helped that throughout all my battles, no enemy dropped a Lv 3 key sphere-ever-, which was what I needed more than anything.

"Level 3 Key Spheres are dropped by Defender Z (Zanarkand Ruins), Behemoth King (Inside Sin), Demonolith (Inside Sin), Machea (Omega Ruins). You can also Bribe Demonolith (Inside Sin, 900,000 gil for 40). They can be found in a chest in the Zanarkand Ruins Dome: Interior, and in a chest in Inside Sin: Sea of Sorrow. It's also the first prize in the Chocobo Minigame, and you have a chance at getting them in a chest in Omega Ruins."

What did you need a level 3 key sphere for anyway?

You gained nothing from leveling up, because everything was acquired through customization.

Oh that's so informative 4 years after I gave up on the game, besides, I knew who to look for, that doesn't mean they gave me what I wanted.
What was the point of tell me?

What did you need a level 3 key sphere for anyway?

Don't recall specifically, but I couldn't get any further on the grid without a key sphere and I needed to do more damage in that fight with Sin where you literally had a 5 turn time limit.

But why does it matter, I've given up on the game, which was 4 years ago--and even if I was to get back into it (fat chance), I don't own the game, nor do I own a PS2.

I am just hating waiting for ToG... To pass the time, I started a low level game on Mario & Luigi 3 to get the alternative ending... Also, I went back to my old file on Secret of Mana... And found out that I have no clue on where to go next. I hate that when you leave off a RPG for such a long time, you have no idea where to go next.

I played Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals sometime ago, didn't know where I was exactly. I started a new game only to find out later that I had nearly completed the game. Oh well.

Well, the game hits Japan in 10 days if that means anything.

I occupied my RPG deprived time with Tales of Eternia.

Great game, way better than Tales of Destiny.
But now since I beat it, I've been trying to fix me Wii so I can get into Muramasa the Demon Blade, excellent sidescrolling action RPG.
If you're a retro gamer, you'll love this game.

Tales of Updates

A recent scan reveals Famitsu Magazine's review score for the upcoming Tales of Graces. Tales of Graces receives a 9/9/9/9 score, garnering the total of 36/40. This is from the main Famitsu score, so we're to expect a score from Famitsu Wii+DS as well. To the unfamiliar, video games are graded by four game reviewers in Famitsu, each gives a score of zero to ten with ten being the highest.

Famitsu's reviewers mostly comment on how fast, fun and exhilarating the new battle system is, though one comments that it might take some time for someone to fully master it. They consider Graces as a truly evolved form of a Tales game.

Tales of Graces comes out in Japan this December 10, 2009. To those who still plan to, pre-orders for the actual game and the Wii Special Pack are still open in Play-Asia.

Tales of Updates

Major media updates for Tales of Graces today. The Tales of Graces Official Site has been updated today with what seems to be the final batch of character videos, one interview video and two new wallpapers of Malik and Pascal. In addition, we have added the videos streamed at the Tales of Graces' Creator's Voice article from the official Nintendo Wii website.

The final batch of character videos are of Hubert, Cheria and Richard. In Hubert's video, we see him receiving a letter from Fendel's soldiers. In Cheria's, Asbel asks her if she's anxious, but she puts up a strong front and says she's fine. In Richard's, he and Asbel have a talk, with Sophie listening in on their conversation. The right-most thumbnail leads to an interview of Kana Hanazawa, Sophie's voice actor.

The Creator's Voice videos are from an article from the official Nintendo Wii website. The article consists of an interview with the game's producers, Shinichirou Okamoto and Hideo Baba and the game's character designer, Mutsumi Inomata. The videos shown in the article have been uploaded to YouTube (see below). They consist mainly of game footage.

I see FF has come up yet again so ill see if i can throw in my 2 cents
FF Tactics was amazing and ungodly drawn out. I cant count how many times ive replayed this game with 100+ hours over the years only to turn around and buy the re has on PSP. Didn't much like the GB versions.
FFVII is a staple game in my life cause it was why i wanted a PlayStation. Plus it really stuck to the Usual RPG format with only slight deviations of the basic formula which worked out great for me cause I loved Materia. To this day i still replay this one as well.
FFVIII is a great game to play as long as i don't have to read any of the story. The FMV's kick ass even by today's standards. The little R1 trick with the gun blade was a neat trick as well as having the Card game which add loads of extra game time.
FFIX was fun but i cant remember a single thing other then i hated the fact that you ddint control when you used a limit break.
FFX is kinda sketchy with me. I hated Yuna and Squal but it was a pretty fun game. Wasnt a fan of the Sphere Grid but i liked the concept of being able to LVL as I saw fit. Never did beat it though...
FFXII was such a short lived game for me....i only got like 4-6 hours of game time and got fed up.
FFVII:Crisis Core was bad ass save for the Random LVL Generator.
FF Dissidia is fun till you realize you have no one to fight against and you don't know where to find any of the materials you need for semi decent items.
And i think my last one is FFIII....the one with Cecil...still amazingly hard even by today's standards.

If we're listing what we think of each of the Final Fantasy series, I might as well have a go.

FFI - I tried playing this once on PSP. There was nothing to hook me in, since there was barely any story. I mean, I like random battles as much as the next person but I need a reason to do them. As such, I gave it up very quickly.

FFII - This one didn't seem that bad. I don't remember doing any crazy tricks for levelling up like other people say they do. The story was far more interesting than FFI's story, but still stuck back in the NES standard. I played it for about five hours, but as I was playing it on my cousin's GBA, and he moved back to Scotland, I was unable to complete it.

FFIII - Bought this one on DS. I got very irritated with the lack of phoenix downs in it. I got stuck on a very long boss fight, then most of my characters died. I beat the boss, but I had run out of phoenix downs. So then there was practically no way of reviving them, so I gave up. I found out later that there's some random monster that drops them every so often, but by that time I had long since given up. The story wasn't interesting either.

FFIV - I'm playing this one at the moment on DS (sort of). It seems to be a step up in narrative from the previous games, and the addition of an auto-battle button makes it very easy to dungeon grind while watching television. However, I feel like the game moves too swiftly through each plot point, in some sort of mad dash towards the end of the game. As such, it makes it very hard for me to actually care about any of the characters, since it barely goes into any detail on how they feel about each thing happening. So, while it seems pretty good for an old RPG, it's not brilliant like I hear it constantly proclaimed.

FFV - I played a bit of this one a while ago. I don't remember a thing about it, aside from the fact that I got stuck at some boss battle and then gave up.

FFVI - This is the first time the series actually started being something apart from other RPGs. The story was far deeper, and I actually cared about the characters for the first time. Again, I don't feel its brilliance like other people do, but it's a good game, and definitely the best of the 2D Final Fantasies. It definitely had some great moments. I'm not a huge fan of the villain because he's really only evil. There's nothing about him that lets you understand him; he's just the embodiment of evil. I tend to like to, to some degree, understand the villain, but this guy is just evil.

FFVII - This might be the nostalgia talking, but it's probably my favourite Final Fantasy. It injected some depth into its characters that I find hard pressed to find in other games (at least, of the time). The main character (who is a terrorist) struggles with the idea of identity; the villain is evil, but it gives you a great idea of why he's evil, etc. I think it's great. Obviously there are a bunch of flaws in it: the translation is bad; the characters mostly have their own little stories, and then don't have an effect on the larger game, etc. But it's one of my favourite games.

FFVII: Crisis Core - Not really a big fan. I didn't think that FFVII needed a prequel.

FFVIII - I did like this game a lot. It tried something different to the main Final Fantasy idea, in that it was more of a love story than an epic adventure. The game was very enjoyable to me. It, again, had its problems: the junction system was easy to exploit, there was no reason to fight any random battles, some of the plot points come out of nowhere with no explanation ("There may be many reasons, but it doesn't matter." anyone?), and the love story between Squall and Rinoa is a little awkward and ham fisted. But despite all that, it has some good characters (Squall can get on your nerves, though), some great moments outside of the overarching story, and, as always, an enjoyable battle system.

FFIX - Great game. An interesting plotline overall. The battle system was clearly trying to emulate the old days of job classes, which I didn't like so much since it forced me to use certain characters rather than my favourite ones. Vivi remains one of my favourite characters across all Final Fantasy.

FFX - Probably the best Final Fantasy (though nostalgia makes me say otherwise). The story is appropriately epic. I loved the villain FFX, since instead of just being this guy who makes everything hard for you, he's a massive whale thing that destroys everything you see. How's that for ever-present evil? Tidus was a bit annoyingly whiny, but I got over it. The battle system was great; I loved having reason to use every character in battles. Oh, and I thought that the laughing scene was a great bit of comedy (I don't know what everyone's problem with this scene was. The awkward way the VAs laughed was the whole point of the scene, was it not?)

FFXI - Fuck FFXI.

FFXII - I liked it, despite what others think. The story was a bit more awkward than usual (for most of the game I was wondering why Vayne was considered so bad by the characters), and it just meandered from one plot point to the next. But it was still an enjoyable game. Balthier and Fran are two of my favourite characters from the series.

FFXIII - Looking forward to it.

That was a lot of text.

FFI - I tried playing this once on PSP. There was nothing to hook me in, since there was barely any story.

Thats totally understandable...im 25 and this game is still before my time tecnically. If im correct this one wasnt even released in the Us till it was made for the GBA/PSP

FFII - This one didn't seem that bad.

I never even saw this one so id imagine it wa slike the first one from NES but with a little bit more stuff...but considering Dragon Quest and Dragon Warrior were foar more noteable from the NES days id assume FF wasnt packing the punch back then we expect from it now. But lets not forget that this was the first FF on american shores(i could be wrong)

The story wasn't interesting either.Im pretty sure this was the first one on SNES with Cecil the Dark Knight/Light Palidin and if it is then yea it was hard as fuck...even by todays standards.

That has ot be one of the best sum ups of the FFVII story ive heard yet

FFVII: Crisis Core - Not really a big fan. I didn't think that FFVII needed a prequel.

It did simply cause so many people wanted to see Zack...the man who made Cloud the badd ass we know and love

I have ot agree for the most part...8 was fun to play but im not a fan of shitty love storys or flat asians for that matter so it fell short in that department for me

I wouldnt say best but ill never forget seeing a PS2 in action for the first time and this game was what I was splaying...it blew my fucking mind how sexy it was...but yet again a shitty love story with a flat asian and an his whining were the only draw backs...but still a fun game non the less

FFXI - Fuck FFXI.

Awww that not fair I for one would like to play it if it wasnt all ready out dated

FFXIII - Looking forward to it.

Looking forward to the fact that it will be on 360 cause im not gettin a PS3 untill God of War 3 comes out and drops in price

That was a lot of text.

yea it was but i liked most of your little opinions of the FF Saga

A game I found very boring to play by myself, and which I lacked the resources to play multiplayer.

and did you ever play FF Tactics

Of course, how could I forget that game?

FF Tactics was great. Sure it's got one of the most convoluted stories in anything ever (though it's still enjoyable), and sure the gameplay is a little outdated by today's standards (I played it at the same time I played Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness, so it was interesting seeing the differences between them), but I enjoyed it. I played it on PSP (which had a great translation) and had a great time training up my Arithmetician to be able to destroy anything on the map.

I'd still say that Disgaea and FFTA are on par with battle system.
I personally prefer FFTA because it doesn't involve grinding to get through the story.
On the other hand, Disgaea has some of the sexiest specials I have seen in a game.

Disgaea beats Tactics on every level.
Not so say Tactics isn't good, in fact it's the only FF I like, just Disgaea is exponentially better.

So I started playing Xenogears on my PSP.

I've been sampling some old RPGs for a little while and I've been very underwhelmed, but Xenogears is the first old RPG that has actually hooked me from the start.

It has a far more exciting opening than I was expecting, despite its complete cliche.

The battle system, so far, isn't very interesting. However, being able to fight with giant robots is exciting enough in itself.

I think this game has actually hooked me enough that I'm going to continue playing it.
