Some I didn't add I'm already trying to find time to watch.
Throw em all in the bin and watch Neon Genesis Evangelion if you haven't seen it
Yeah, I've seen it but hardly remember it, so it's worth another go around. Didn't really see the movies, maybe just the first one?
For the original series there's two movies, the first is Death & Rebirth which is just a recap with a few new scenes. The way it's structured highlights some interesting correlations and how much the characters change over the show, but it's inconsequential overall.
The more important film is The End of Evangelion, an alternate take on the last two episodes and imo the crown jewel of the whole franchise & on e of the greatest piece of fiction in any medium.
More recently there's a remake tetralogy, Rebuild of Evangelion. Only three of the four films are out and there's no word on when the last one will show up. They're much lighter on the existentialism and abstract visuals and instead simplify the characters & focus more on the action.
For an action anime they're really good and up there as some of the best looking animated films I've ever seen, but they cut out the stuff that actually makes Eva special imo. 2.22 in particular is fantastic for what it is though.
