Little Witch Academia, a 26 minute short film made as part of Anime Mirai, a government funded project to find and train young animators in Japan. That was the most successful short of that year so it got a sequel short film and has a TV series on the way.
Worth watching for sure, and if you like it consider watching some of the other Mirai shorts, it's pretty exciting in that it's essentially a show reel for the future of anime. Death Billiards from the same year is really cool and got about as much praise, and lead to the tv series Death Parade.

Cowboy Bebop isn't a cult classic at all, it's mainstream and loved by everyone. I'm struggling to think of an example too but the work of Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue) might quality, things that evade the mainstream and are harder to "get", but the people who seek them out absolutely love them. Tenshi no Tamago or Angel's Egg is another good example, a film that nearly ended Mamoru Oshii's career (the guy who directed Ghost in the Shell) for being too obtuse, but it has built such a strong and dedicated little fan base. It's one of my favourite movies, but it's not something I'd recommend to most people - that's what a cult classic is to me.
The other end of the cult spectrum is something like Mars of Destruction, the so-bad-it's-good category.

The mention of Cowbop reminded me I meant to respond to this. I don't necessarily disagree with the consensus but I've never had that kind of experience with the show, it took me ages to get through the first time and I can't rewatch it without skipping some episodes. Mushroom Samba actually puts me in a bad mood to try and get through. It's the excessively episodic nature that kills it for me, the episode quality is just so hit and miss.
There's several absolutely brilliant ones but then, again using mushroom samba as an example, even by the standards of a bottle episode absolutely nothing happens, and it happens at a snails pace. The trips are extremely unimaginative and the whole episode boils down to punchline some random internet stoner would have thought up "haha what if everyone got high bro!", there's only about five seconds of entertainment value in that. If the whole episode were turned into one sentence referencing the event in a separate episode it would have carried more value.
If it were shortened to a <15 episode series it would probably be one of my favourites too, but I understand it would no longer be the show everyone else loved at that point. I do like it and it always comes to mind as a recommendation but the episodes miss often enough to have ruined it for me. Well, that and Ed can fuck off.
At 8/26/16 10:26 PM, Sense-Offender wrote: No, you're right. The dub is how to watch Cowboy Bebop.
I don't care which way anyone chooses to watch a show and here it's a perfectly valid choice, but this annoys me when it gets said so often and basically just isn't true. The english dub is massively overrated for being one of the few competent and memorable dubs of the time with Spike standing out in particular, but the japanese is still clearly, or at least arguably, the better performance.
Vicious in particular is way out in front of the english version and Spike has a great deal more versatility and nuance, being more genuinely threatening, frightened or reservedly emotional when the need arises while the dub version can end up being monotone in his gaiety. For lesser background characters there's usually no comparison. Ed can fuck off in either version though.
Again it's good enough either way, but if one usually listens to japanese voices there's no need to make an exception. A good english version just makes it even more of a subjective choice and not a matter of quality.

I dunno then, cult classic doesn't mean obscured but the definition isn't consistent so you'd be hard pressed to find the one that fits your version of the term.
I can name more obscured anime series than I can name a "cult classic" when it comes to that, even then I'm not sure if Shurato is that obscured since I heard somewhere that the OP theme was still remembered.

That was my reaction too when I came across that.
Few days before I stumbled into a Youtube video of a fan made anime opening of Hitler with Evangelion opening theme playing, I wonder if that was what the parody was for.

Best waifu
Been watching Gurren Lagann recently and quite enjoying it. Little past the half way point now and it feels like things are about to get real.
I knew nothing about the series going into it, but I was a little unsure of it up until the confrontation with the Spiral King. I felt like it was advancing too quickly and that major bad guys were appearing in one episode and gone in the next. Hoping to watch the rest of it this weekend.
Once I'm done with Gurran Lagann, I'm going to work my way through DBZ Kai. Managed to get season 1, 2 and 4 off eBay for a decent bit less than they go for on Amazon, so just need to pick up season 3 at some point and I'll be sorted.
I'm an anime/DBZ noob, but what's the deal with the stuff that came after the Cell Saga? Is there any talk of if/when that gets a Western Kai release?
Toonami is back tonight. Hunter X Hunter is getting closer to the end of the Hunter exam. Which one will fail?
Who here rereads the manga over the internet because you wanted to look at the tsukkomis?

Pokemon. It got way too repetitive

I'm even more upset that Shokugeki no Soma, one of my favorite manga, has just been licensed on Mangahere. I can no longer read it there. I'll miss the funny tsukkomis. Looks like I'll have to stick with Kissmanga from now on.
The Great Purge of 2014...never forget.

I kind of want to know since it's very adorable.
The guy reminds me of the husband from I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying, a pretty funny short series with lots of meta otaku jokes, with only 3 minutes per episode.
But I'm pretty sure it's actually from Hanamaru Kindergarten, also known as ear-ache in anime form.
Windscar!
Have you ever seen Inuyasha?
I think it's the first anime I saw.
I just re-watched it.
So nostalgic
Toonami starts at midnight tonight. Will it be the permanent start time this season. They are ending Parasite tonight, for the second time.

It's very cool actually, is there more dubstep music in the anime in parts other than the opening/ending?
I kinda always wanted to watch an anime that has dubstep battle scenes and etc.
only in the first few episodes

It is not bad, but I enjoyed Attack on Titan better.
Gundam IBO S2 started off somewhat ok, nowhere near as good as the prior season. There's some QUALITY here and there, but it's forgivable. I'm hoping it doesn't drop the ball hard like S1 did and make me drop it -- the second Gundam series, after AGE, to make me do that. ZZ had a poor first half, too, but had a much better cast to carry it through to the better parts. IBO doesn't have much good characters so I'm not expecting much.
