In response to Otaku as being something negative in Japan, I would debate (though it still is something many Americans would consider as negative) that it's meaning has changed within our current culture, to which I'll still consider myself one, even in this group. To me, and those I know both offline and online who consider themselves as such, it seems more like someone who is extremely interested in not only Anime, but in the Japanese culture entirely.
Just like "Hentai" in Japan is a direct root to what would be translated as "Pervert" here, as "Lolicon"
I believe, in Japan refers more to the "Lolita Complex" than it does the erotic animation of childlike anime characters. Furthermore I'll take the risk of saying I'm a fan of both what Westerners would consider Hentai and Lolicon.
Also, do the members here often pick an Anime character they feel best represents their actual self? As I've seen this done in many similar places.
