Unless we're discussing One Piece, Black Lagoon or Outlaw Star, all of which prominently feature Pirates, Outlaw Star having SPACE PIRATES.
Anyway, yes, no Pirates here, arr.

So, raise your hand if you ever watched an anime film in school before.
*raises hand*
Raise your hand if it was a GOOD anime!

Yeah, saw Naruto the Movie 3 in school today, since I had nothing better to do. Ugh, it was totally boring, and Rock Lee is the gayest Bruce Lee knock off ever.

We watch anime in my Japanese class every so often.
In fact, we just watched Princess Mononoke.
In English.
Yeah, I don't really know what the point of that was.
I think we're going to watch Grave of the Fireflies sometime soon.

Personally, I don't really want to be watching these films in class.
For one, I've already seen them, and another, it's my final year of school and I really feel like I should be doing work in my classes.
Of course, the rest of my class doesn't agree with me.

Knowing my piss poor luck this will be on the bottom of the page...
Also, I'm using my PS3 until i can afford the parts to piece a new computer together so i can't really quote or edit or anything usefull. Shit terrible system but it works none the less.
Gendo. I noticed you said you[can't say WE since I'm never around...}got rid of the old system of requirements. As in just anyone can join or is the list five and then what got you into anime, likes and dislikes etc...?
Saw some SEED. It's alright to me now since my girlfriend was into it and had a gundam falling out thanks to a friend of hers bashing her for liking the cosmic era. What I don't understand is her friend liked Wing of all gundam series. Gack... G Gundam is where it's at people. Get with the MOTHERFUCKING HOT BLOOD AND WIN.
I've not had the time or money for anything manga or anime related. Side note I'm getting awesome at DDR and becoming more aware of the massive amounts of J-Rock bands out there pushing the visual kei movement.

Since when is Gendo the head of this club? Eh!?
I don't think anyone really cares about that silly little requirement system, since essentially this is just a thread. Why should people need to fulfill requirements to post in it?
In other clubs, if I want to post in them, I tend to just post in them, regardless whether they have a joining system or not.
Although, I liked it when people could pick characters to represent them, since that was rather neat. Though I doubt anyone would want to manage that.
Also, general quiz. What anime is my signature from?

You're obsessed with a cartoon character?
I think you have a problem.

Yeah, that's pretty much why we don't bother enforcing it anymore.

That tradition I do not discourage, as my signature makes obvious.

Basically I'm on the hunt for more anime/manga of shojo quality really. It really is my favourite type, especially when it falls under romantic comedy. Not sure if many of you fine chaps have an interest in these types, but any advise on what to read or watch next would be great.

Hmm, my knowledge of shojo is really rather low, and I don't know what you've seen either.
X, maybe?
Well, that's not really romantic comedy, but does contain romance, and is intended for a female audience.

Kashimashi, especially the manga, for God's sake.
Also, I've come to the conclusion that despite having a better story, the GTO manga pales in comparison to the anime's insane fun factor.
At 5/17/08 09:08 PM, Gendo wrote: Kashimashi, especially the manga, for God's sake.
Pfft.
Kashimashi is a shonen, not a shojo.
It was serialised in Dengeki Daioh, a shonen magazine.
Though it IS a romantic comedy.
Kuro - Puting the 'Kur' back in 'inkurable disease.'

Just to put it out there, my favorite Anime is Elven Lied.

Try reading it, lol.
It's hardly similar to anything else DD publishes in overall tone.
LET'S JUST BANDY ABOUT WILD ASSUMPTIONS BECAUSE OF THE MAGAZINE'S DEMOGRAPHIC
It has infinitely too much crying and genuine emotion to be shonen, to boot.
And even if it's considered shonen doesn't change the fact it's a good romantic comedy.
At 5/17/08 10:32 PM, Gendo wrote: It has infinitely too much crying and genuine emotion to be shonen, to boot.
ARE YOU SAYING THAT TEENAGE BOYS CANNOT UNDERSTAND EMOTION!?
The fact that it was serialised in a shonen magazine clearly means it was targeted towards boys.
Unless the writer thought "Oh hey, girls probably buy magazines targeted towards boys more than magazines targeted towards girls".

Yeah.
Look at shit like School Days.
The fact that it was serialised in a shonen magazine clearly means it was targeted towards boys.
Well Akahori and crew were really doing it wrong, then. There's not nearly enough stupid fanservice or insanely predictable plot twists for it to be shonen romance.
But hey, distinctly not-shonen stuff under shonen branding seems oddly common these days.
Viz released Read or Dream (an insanely slow-paced, psuedoyuri kinda comedy) under their fucking Action imprint. I think there were like two fight scenes over the course of the whole series, totalling about ten or so pages. Compared to like a three chapter long story about a sexually confused virgin woman who's got some blind loli lusting after her, in the first fucking volume, told with tact and grace as opposed to the whole "JESUS CHRIST LESBIAN MAKEOUT" approach.
tl;dr Demographics are insanely misleading.
At 5/17/08 11:52 PM, Gendo wrote: tl;dr Demographics are insanely misleading.
You just have to remember the difference between a demographic and a genre.
Just because something is intended for a specific audience doesn't mean that it has to be similar to other things that are intended for that audience.
Also, just because something is intended for a specific audience, doesn't mean that that specific audience is going to like it.
In any case, I haven't read this manga, or seen the anime of it.

Speaking of lame, gonna try and endure more of Ranma 1/2's abyssmal fourth season.
I won't be able to continue to the not-shit parts without finishing it, plus I can't really be arsed to watch anything remotely intellectual at this hour.

You seem to like to punish yourself.
By the way, if you think that that part of Ranma is abysmal, I wonder what I'd think of it.
What with being rather indifferent towards the one and a half seasons I watched.

Oh well, he saved me $40.

You'd probably despise it.
It's about fifty percent filler, fifty percent goddamned stupid multi-part stories that go nowhere.
I think the writing staff must have done a lot of inhalants before writing this shit. The characterisations are inaccurate as Hell.
Plus the already so-so animation takes a huge dive in quality.

You know, I wonder how you can consider Ranma 1/2 to be the best anime ever when there is apparently such a terrible... Quarter, or half of the series.
I tend to like short shows more than long shows. Doesn't give them a chance to go downhill (well, sometimes).

A good chunk of that is pure nostalgia value (it was the first manga I ever read, and I've consistently enjoyed it for like eight years), another chunk is really fucking loving the parts that don't suck (first two seasons, about 12 episodes of season three and pretty much everything past season six minus the BAD END).
As much as I've seen shows that are much more consistent, I've never really seen too much that I've enjoyed as much or more.
Cowboy Bebop comes really, really close, though. As does the good parts of Lupin III.
But yeah, despite a pretty big stretch of being utter shite, I cannot deny that I find the series insanely entertaining.
