But overall, excellent film.

Cool, i´ll see if i can find it.
And can someone tell me whether these films are worth getting...

Paprika,
Steam Boy,
Tokyo Godfathers.

Yeah they look pretty good. I like the more mature, realistic style of anime now, like the ghibli studio movies, or Akira (talkin art wise) The pointy faces and huge eyes don´t do it for me anymore, but these other movies have so much detail they´re eye candy.

If given the chance I'd recommend Steam boy to all.

Some other ones that look mature: GITS, AppleSeed, and Black Lagoon.

All of those are good titles, especially Tokyo Godfathers. It's a damn funny movie and has a good ending to it.

Why would you want a dub for it?

It's one of those animes which wouldn't make sense in English.

I just got Akira out of the library.

I'm about 100 or so pages into it, and so far I'm preferring the movie.

Largely because everything that's happened is the same, and in the movie it's moving.

You'd hope so.

The first novel is some 350 pages long, and it looks like there's at least 6 in total.

Has anyone here seen or heard of Madlax? I can't seem to sit through an episode long enough to figure anything out, and the name makes me think of an extreme laxative. I'm not saying this anime is shit, but I'm not not saying it either.

" According to the director Mashimo, the title is a portmanteau of two English words: MAD and reLAXed, mirroring the authors' intention to portray the two extremes of human being."

Yeah, that.

It sounds like fun.

By the time you hit volume two, things change up completely.

The similarities to the movie die off very quickly.

Is it worth reading the rest of it?

Because in order to do so I'd have to either:

A: Buy the series (which is ridiculously expensive).
Or
B: Go into town, pay my library fine, reserve the next volume, wait a few weeks, etc.

Both of which seem like a lot of effort.

Actually my brother got it out for me, after being so lucky as to actually find it in the library.

How much were the volumes in stores?

Around 70 dollars last time I checked.

lol. I got wasted last night and put a small round hamper on my head and told my friend I was Jubei Yagyu. I also wrote all over my arm with a marker and it's going to take a while for it to come off.

So, I have somewhere around $140, I think and I will be going to the Palisades mall sometime either at the end of this week or next week to do some Christmas shopping. The mall has a Japanese import shop and I'm hoping that I'll have some money left over to spend there.

Damn, I thought they were much cheaper than that. Well, I still plan on getting them someday.

70 NZD is around 50 USD, but things seem to largely be cheaper in the US.

This is true, Manga and Anime in America cheap as hell, even compared to our Japanese friends.
Usually Manga in America is around $8-$14, while Anime is usually $20-$30 per DVD (as in 3 episodes).

Oh, that's not as cheap as I thought it was.

Here manga seems to mostly be around $15, and anime DVDs tend to be 25-30.

Yeah, I've been wanting to get the Texhnolyze, Gungrave, and Blue Gender box sets, but I'm not going to be buying any box sets when I'm there. I don't really have anything in mind. I'll be browsing. Though, I may get one or two Lone Wolf and Cub DVDs or perhaps Fudoh, which is a hilarious Takashi Miike film. That store has quite the manga collection. Some is in English and some in Japanese (like I'd ever bother to learn the language).

Man, I love the Palisades mall.

Then why is Akira so ridiculously priced? Also there are some manga that only cost about $10.( well i think, since the Yotsuba manga volumes only cost that much)

I had the chance to buy all the Akira mangas a long time ago, but as you guys say, it was ridiculously expensive. I think it was about 80-90Pounds for the whole lot (150Dollars) and i was still young with no income so i couldn´t get it. But i would really like to read it because Akira is, and always has been my favourite anime movie, and i´d like to know what happens after the movie (i read the movie is only the first manga).

Response to Anime Club 2007-12-05 20:13:55

Its pretty cheap on the East Coast man, I mean with the way I have my money set up (mind you im not getting a job til im 16) I could get about 5 Manga or 2 Anime DVD's a month, but since Ive gotten into Warhammer 40,000 I highly doubt thats gonna happen for awhile, and I need to update my stocks im seriously behind as it is.

Back on topic though Tokyopop is $10, Shonen Jump is always $8, Viz Action and Viz Shoujo (I think I spelled it wrong) are usually $9-$10. So its pretty cheap compared to others. Now some other Titles like Hellsing are like $14, and are only around 180 pages. Though I'll admit watching a Vampire kill undead Nazis is like a past time to me, so its worth it.
Now with Anime it can vary wildly, but what I love about the near FYE and and BestBuy is that they both have an entire section out of all the movies dedicated to just Anime (on side note FYE has a huge stockpile of Hentai movies and games strange enough). BestBuy however doesn't take back the Anime you buy so you'll never find used Anime there but new untouched stuff, however they suffer from not having that big of a library (only around 3 shelves that are not surprisingly between War movies and Sci-Fi) however they sell it cheap: $20 for the usual Single DVD (that can contain 3-4 episodes) then the colllections that range from $30-$120 (The full Escaflowne series (not including movie) is selling at only around $30). FYE has a bbigger stockpile of anime for you to choose from and will sell new and used anime, however they are a bit more expensive unless you buy the used ones.

Just an insight on what you will expect to find if you ever stop in Virginia.
