The ending of the manga is utterly disappointing unless you've read the rest of the series, and skipping huge chunks of the story is a surefire way to confuse and annoy yourself.

Keep in mind the anime is nothing like the manga, so plot points you already know are either totally different or nonexistant.

Hell, the only Rumiko Takahashi series with an actual ending is Maison Ikkoku, which happens to have one of the most conclusive and satisfying endings ever.

More than that. After the first four or so volumes, the similarities pretty much end. A lot of characters are rewritten (Hoenheim and the Fuhrer in particular, but I won't reveal specifics) and there are shitloads of other stories that do not appear at all in the anime.
