If you really understood it, the reason Gaara's village was at his side before he was revived was because no one saw him as a monster even before he was revived from the brink of death.

So did you watch it in both orders, or are you still watching it in Haruhi order? It's cool that they refer to the last episode (in Haruhi order) before you see it, and the main guy is given warnings from the future about it, so you get a sense of what occured in it.
