YES, MY TRICK WORKED, SO I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO FINSIH SLAYERS!
***SPOILERS AHEAD FOR SLAYERS!!! MASSIVE REVIEW AHEAD! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!***
Well, the heroine was rather unique. As opposed to being all "ZOGM LETSH SAVE TEH WORLD!1," she was clearly movtivated by greed, showing that you don't have to have these "pure of heart" heroes/heroines to have a great series. Gourry shows that the hero doesn't have to be smart, as he seems to be very, VERY messed up. Zelgoddoss (I KNOW I probably butchered that name, cut me soem slack!) is actually one of the most interesting characters: a revenge-motivated guy who hasn't let his need for revenge corrupt him entirely. Later on, we're joined by the INCREDIBLY dense Amelia, who proves that too much "goodness" is a VERY bad thing, and by some girl who's in love with Gourry. (I REALLY want to say Sylvia here....), whose kind heart seems to restrict her magic power or something.
As for the main villain (Rezzo and his copy), they're quite interesting characters, particularly the copy, who is OBSESSED with surpassing the original just to prove he can. When he mentioned that he would let Lina use the GIgaSlave against him, I figured that she'd use it, but instead of using the Lord of Nightmares, call on Shabernigdo to power it this time. Course, the fact that she didn't even fire it shot that idea all to hell, but still.
Now, we come to one of the most tragic characters, Eris. I think the name Aeris/Eris is cursed in Japan, cause they killed off Aeris in FFVII, and Eris gets killed by the copy Rezzo in Slayers. I think they have something against people named Aeris/Eris. Though Eris never comes otu and says it, her love for the original Rezzo is all too obvious, but her murder at the hands of the copy shows that her vengeance was pointless. I found myself really wanting Eris to live, if for no other reason than that I'd love to see her try to get along with Lina after the Rezzo copy got killed. But they killed her off. :'(
Ah, Zangaless. This guy is just weird. He has like five "final" battles with Gourry (this shit makes as much sense as having a Final Fantasy II or III or whatever), and finalyl gets his ass kicked. I thought he'd kill himself with what was left of his sword, but from the sneak peek I saw at the end of the DVDs, he's needed for Slayers Next.
Probably the villain who was most different from my expectations was Shabernigdo. I figured that, like most demons, he'd be completely evil and depraved, an embodiment of "sin," if you will. But he actually seems rather honorable, particularly after Lina kicks his ass and he basically says "Good job, you thrashed me," and dies a really freaky death.
One thing I LOVED about this series is that Lina didn't learn a new spell every singel battle to take care of a new bad guy. They used their existing powers in new and inventive ways to beat the Rezzo copy at the end. I'll admit that using a "blessed sword" seems a bit cheesy, but it's not as bad as if Lina had gone "ZOGM I HAVE THIS UBER POWERFUL SPELL THAT I CAN USE NOW CUZ I'M STRONG LIKE THAT!!1" On a related note, I was really glad that Lina didn't resort to the Dragon Slave every single fight, because that would have been really cheap, and I especially love the simple explanation they gave for why she didn't use it.
There was something that confused me for a while: since Rezzo helped Lina kill Shabernigdo (it seems to me that he basically held Shabernigdo in place while Lina used the GigaSlave), why would Rezzo need to be avenged? Of course, then I realized two things: One, that Aeris wasn't aware of exactly WHAT had happened with Rezzo, other than that Lina, Gourry, and Zelgoddoss had killed him; and two, that the copy Rezzo wasn't interested in avenging the original as much as he was itnerested in beating Lina to prove that he could surpass the original.
The seperation of the types of magic was realyl cool, too. It seems a bit odd that Amelia was learning Dark Magic a bit of the way into the thing, like Fireball, but meh, I guess she just picked it up from running around with Lina. It was a bit confusing how sometimes, they all had to chant to cast a spell, but they could cast that same spell without saying a word a few minutes later.

Overall, I give Slayers a 10/10. It has a perfect blend of humor and action, with some pretty unique characters tossed in for good measure.
