Game Design
Do you feel like the best way to learn game design theory is through playing video games yourself, or through textbook learning? I feel like there is so much to be learned from video game playing in general, but so much can also be learned from classroom-style teaching.
What is the best way you learn? Is it production, playing, or classroom? Or a little of all?
Hi there!
Game Design
Well, I don't have much experience with game design personally (working on first serious one now), but in general, I find the best way I learn is through production. That isn't to say the others aren't important though. In general, theory learned in the classroom can be carried over to the production side of things, but I think that the more experienced you are in production, the easier it is to apply the theory part of things.
As for playing games, that is also important. If a game isn't fun, what's the point? If you play a lot of games, both good and bad, you'll most likely have a better idea of what works and what doesn't, as opposed to someone who, while they may have all of the classroom know-how, doesn't have much experience playing games.
That's my opinion, and I may be way off. But in short, I find production to be the best for learning.
So yesterday I came back home after a 3 week Motion Graphics course at SVA in NYC. I learned a shit load of awesome stuff and I'm really happy I did it. I learned how to use After Effects so I just ordered the educational version today for myself. Here is a link to my final project. Let me know what you think :)

At first I was thinking "Oh nice, right under the water, and then a cool transition to a tropical area" and then about 20 seconds later I was sad :P
But in all seriousness, it looked pretty good, and I loved the transitions you made, especially from the seagull flying to (what looked to be) a savannah-ish plain with the deer. Seems that 3 week course was definitely worth it.

Cool stuff, I really wish Flash had a fluid camera system like After Effects, everything always comes out looking so smooth. The camera drop down into the water was really cool and the way you kind of tracked one animal to the next. I'm actually almost done taking a 5-week class at Columbia in Chicago, but it's for traditional animation...yeah just decided to make that little connection there. Let me know if you think buying After Effects is worth it though, I might have to save up for it after seeing your project.
always behind schedule.

Heh, nice. I voted 5 for the simple fact that you incorporated the "You are all banned" picture in there.
As for the cloud sig maker...that could be good or bad :P

You can get educational versions of Photoshop CS3, After Effects CS3, Illustrator CS3, Flash CS3 and some other stuff all for $600. Seemed like a pretty good deal to me. After Effects was way more powerful than I expected it to be. I always thought Flash was cool, but After Effects brings motion to whole new level. And its integration with Photoshop is really nice. Definitely worth it in my opinion. Our teacher showed us this awesome site for inspiration. http://motionographer.com. Maybe you know it already but if not check it out, there's some really cool stuff that demonstrates how powerful AE can be.

Why am I a soggy purple cat, with no arms? It just doesnt make sense, I dont even like cats that much. You will all have to wait to find out the true meaning behind cloud sigs, and believe me, it's a killer, oh boy is it.
Re:After effects
MaNWfi talked about After Effects.
I have been meaning to teach myself After Effects for a year now. I have had access to it at college, and freetime to get to know it, but havent had more than a glance even though it looks like something crazy. Do you think it is something someone can pick up on their own? I'd be up for looking at tutorials and what not. I will enquire with you about this at a later date.
Nice short movie there. I can't comment on technical quality of it, since first id have to know the program, but it did look quality. Isn't it cool thinking, christ, this is literally something as good as stuff broadcast, in magazines, on billboards wherever. It is literally that good and I did that.
Re:Game design
JimTb asked about game design.
I was lying in bed yesterday thinking about what is it that makes games playable, what makes them fun and so on. Why do we want to play them? It'd be interesting to learn about this, have you done that JMTB like gone on a course about 'game design'? I don't know which is best. I think solely learning from playing games though, which is what is going on here (alot of it atleast) is going to make the games copies and then hopefully they will tear away and be something different.

Well, I'd have to say that production is the best way, playing is important too, but classroom isn't realy too helpful in learning how to actually design a good game.
Programming them is a different story, but for actually just being able to lay out a good game idea requires expierence. Playing games helps you know what a good game is, but actually making one will help you find out how to design it well.
Like, a gamer (not a game maker) could have an idea for a gameplay element that sounds cool in theory but in reality would just hinder the gameplay. Like, making a shooter "realistic" or having the arrows in zelda be fired by puling the wiimote back then releasing a button. Sounds good, but would hinder the gameplay or make it unenjoyable.
So i guess playing games can help give ideas, but making games helps you realize which ideas are practical or fun.
Game Design
I once thought that classroom like learning would be useless to help teach you game design. In school our "game design class" or so they call it, we do very little that would help you to produce a good game, we basically just copy codes from a book, teaches you nothing. But when I went in to do my work experience which was programming, I got a big long one on one style talk all about this Application Development Life Cycle. That was a really good experience for me and I think more time on stuff like that would help me make games better. I mean I know it can't get taught how to make good games but if you get taught good processes it can help you get the best out of your work and also with the better organization make the whole process a lot quicker.
All that being said I think that the absolute best way to go about it all is practice, with practice you get to know how you best handle the design aspect of games. So really hands on stuff is, in my opinion, the best way to learn it.
Actually playing games I dont think is completely essential but it does make it easier to know what plays well and what doesnt. For example from playing lots of games I know that if you want to make a simple flash game that there shouldn't be lengthy instructions or hard to grasp controls and game play.
That's just my view on things I think that process can be taught and good process can mean a good final outcome, but some are good enough to get a good outcome with a sloppy process.

Does anyone know the code for getting a movie clip to have the same x coordinates as the mouse?

Arg! It good but the contrast on text and background makes it a real effort to read the text. Try white.
I also hear that red based websites give off a bad vibe...
Other than that the mascot guy is pretty cool. Also, good choice of fonts.
