Example? I could see what you mean from your 4 second series from my own point of view.

wut u on bout!? 4 scnd seris nt orginal!!! it a complte rpoff of wairowrez!!!

But yeah, I see what you mean. The first game was original (in the way that it hadn't been done in flash before), and the third kind of defined a type of "minigame madness" category. But I can't seem to fit Four Second Frenzy into the ripoff section. Ahh heck, for the sake of completeness, Four Second Frenzy was a ripoff of WarioWare :P

And there's a cae study of Jmtb02's theory :D

almost...

I think that depends on who you ask. I imagine the next one will get a lot of flak too, because some will feel that they copied your idea of a Flash version of WarioWare-ish game. And anyone unfamiliar with FSF would give them the flak they would have given you. At any rate, I think it'll take more than 3. But there is a middle zone that gets it worse than the earlier and the later incarnations. Surely you knew this was coming though. Borrowing a popular concept can't just be all good and no drawbacks.

Personally, I don't feel it's the originality factor people necessarily seek in games.

In my opinion, the only thing that a game can be classified based on is the "it" factor.

I mean if you almost completely rip off another game, but it has that "it" factor, it's going to do well.

What is the "it" factor? It can be a number of things. It can be improvements over a similar game, a similar game but with a popular social or political issue, or just something relating to current events.

But its something nice to bag on if people are feeling cynical.

Maybe three stages rather than three games suits it a little better then.

Borrowing or taking a popular concept for the sake of it is always bad. If you're inspired by it to do something similar, that's another thing. There's a big difference between thinking: "HEY PEOPLE LIEK THIS ILL MAKE IT AND EVERYONE WILL VOT FIVE LOLOLOL!!!", and thinking: "Hey, that's a pretty cool game. It's the sort of thing I'd like to have been involved in if I'd had the chance. Infact, I think I feel a burst of creative force coming along!"

The most important thing about trying to be successful is make it good. And not just good, but better. It's nearly impossible to be completely original, so just make your game the best of it's kind. Making a defense game? Great. Now add superb art, twists like gravity and wind, combo systems and explosions, and weather effects. Bam. Perfect defense game. And to make it even more perfect add a sequal in say.... sometime this winter/spring.

Yeah, I can definitely agree with this. I wanna make a Jet Grind Radio themed game really badly. I just don't know if I could feel right doing it, because none of that belongs to me in any way. Advance Wars has also inspired me a lot. At least with that, I could just make a turnbased strategy with that inspiration though.
As far as some of the other posts, I can only really say this: A game doing well and a game being respectable are two very different things.

One wouldn't possibly be hinting a release date for Nightstrike 2 would they?

Supersoldier was a cool game. But going back and forth across the same map and facing the same enemies over and over again gets kind of repetitive. Don't you think?

which is why we are planning a supersoldier++.... it's more of a level based system with bosses and stuff. A game rather than a minigame

Luis: the buttsecks mission. Go around teh BBS and try and have buttsecks with as many n00bs as you can by using cheesy chat up lines such as 'u know, mods always have the biggest knobs' etc.

Id 5 taht anyday.

Luis would not need chat up lines. Most of the noobs here would just jump on his cock before he could even get a word in. The game would be more like Luis trying to run from noobs.
I think Luis is the most referenced member in other people's sigs I see his name all over the goddamn place.
