RE: Respect

for first impressions, i look at their level, sign-up date, batting averages, and whatever else is in their profile. i especially do this for people asking for help on stuff. if they are asking for help on a complex problem, i'm not going to try to answer if they appear to not know much about flash. think i'm getting a little off-topic.

unless i know who they are, i look at their stats and recent posts. age typically plays a big factor in this; most posts with stupid questions that have been answered consistently for years are made by naïve 13-year-olds. i think my roughness on the younger ones came about because i was a noob when i came here (in fact, i was 12. i'm now 16), and i was generally thought of as a stupid idiot, but i guess that all changed when i stopped misspelling and abbreviating stuff. grammar also plays a huge factor in how i respect people. Lord-Sonx is probably a good example of this: for a while, i thought he was just a kinda dumb kid, and i occasionally still do, but as far as respect goes, he's a cool guy. it's people like iamironman and evilbro92 that really piss me off, though.

to patu1: who are you and why do you keep posting here? you don't have any flash, hardly any posts.....since when were you a flash reg? patu1 is another example of how grammar = respect. how can you really look up to someone who just posted this: "i didn't get to go out beacose i was thery tierd ad the day after the silvester we have
school in israel beacose you know silvester was a mega nazi juw killer....
but mery new year evrybody"?

Copious amounts of code?

a lot, if not all, of us regs have made games. what game of yours has the most lines of code, and how many lines of code does it have? for me...Halloween Reprisal, clocking in at 436 lines of code. that probably isn't a lot to some of you, though! :P

RE: Copious amounts of code?

My flash games generally don't have a shitload of lines. Grammachnaphobia, for example only had 412 lines of code (spread out in 5 seperate Class files) but I tried to keep everything tight, in functions and classes... such as this one, used to determine what word should come next (to cut down on overall code) I'm sure I could have shaved a ton off, by combining some lines.

public function pickWord(){ //works
level = _root.currentLevel;
_root.correctCount = 0;
var tempLevel:Number = level - 1;
var tempLevelLength:Number = totalLevels[tempLevel].length
if(tempLevelLength < 1){
_root.play();
}
var tempWord = Math.floor(Math.random()*tempLevelLength)
var currentWord = totalLevels[tempLevel][tempWord]
totalLevels[tempLevel].splice(tempWord,1);
_root.currentWord = currentWord
var curWord = new String(currentWord)
for(var i = 0; i < curWord.length; i++){
_root.cutWord[i] = curWord.substr(i,1)
}
_root.spawnBugs();
}

Now, with some of the small window Apps I've been messing around with in Visual C++, I've gone over about 2500+ lines of code, just for all of the small apps, because you have to worry about visuals such as buttons, boxes, feilds. Some of it is done for you with the IDE, but it can begin to clog up the programs pretty fast.

Actually, an address book I made in C++ that could save/load to a text file was about 2200 lines.

These are still small amounts of code as far as I'm concerned.

Irony Dilemma

I think he meant if he made a post about being a grammar Nazi but made many grammatical errors while doing so, would it be considered irony.

Not irony. (But most common misuse of the word... )

It's generally confused with hypocrisy.

1. Insincerity by virtue of pretending to have qualities or beliefs that you do not really have
2. Professing one belief or action while doing an opposite.

Irony (From dictionary.com) .. the "almost" sarcasm defintion, as I like to call it.

1. the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice! when I said I had to work all weekend.

Or the secondardy defintion, when defining events, not speech..

5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.

And probably the best overall description of it...

—Synonyms 1, 2. Irony, sarcasm, satire indicate mockery of something or someone.

The essential feature of irony is the indirect presentation of a contradiction between an action or expression and the context in which it occurs. In the figure of speech, emphasis is placed on the opposition between the literal and intended meaning of a statement;

one thing is said and its opposite implied,

as in the comment, “Beautiful weather, isn't it? made when it is raining or nasty.

Ironic literature exploits, in addition to the rhetorical figure, such devices as character development, situation, and plot to stress the paradoxical nature of reality or the contrast between an ideal and actual condition, set of circumstances, etc., frequently in such a way as to stress the absurdity present in the contradiction between substance and form.

Irony differs from sarcasm in greater subtlety and wit.

In sarcasm ridicule or mockery is used harshly, often crudely and contemptuously, for destructive purposes. Sarcasm may be used in an indirect manner, and have the form of irony, as in “What a fine musician you turned out to be! or it may be used in the form of a direct statement, “You couldn't play one piece correctly if you had two assistants.

The distinctive quality of sarcasm is present in the spoken word and manifested chiefly by vocal inflection, whereas satire and IRONY, arising originally as literary and rhetorical forms, are exhibited in the organization or structuring of either language or literary material.

Satire usually implies the use of irony or sarcasm for censorious or critical purposes and is often directed at public figures or institutions, conventional behavior, political situations, etc.

In closing
Hopefully, that clears some things up and I don't have to grit my teeth every time I see the word used incorrectly. At least once a day actually...

Think before you irony.

Respect
I ussually look at the level and the number of posts.. because someone with little number of posts means he isnt used to the bbs.. but at the same time posts can be spam... but still it means you have been ehre for a while.. with levels it also shows how much have you messed up in NG.. also the name and the grammar means something.. i mean seing someone whose name is super-nuclear354986351 (to say something) and writes 'omg teh s3cks' doesnt give me a good impression.. i know i also make mistakes (fast typing).. we all do .. and i really respect the ones who dont coz it means that either they check their posts before submitting or type really well..

and patu1: i havent never actually taken you seriously because i never understandwhat you write.. you make short posts with messed up letters and hardly ever use any comas or stuff .. it gives me the impression that your speaking fast and without reason.. i had never ebfore said anything becasue i didnt want to be a whore.. but i guess we need to be honest in this new year

Re: Copious amounts of code?

Well, I'm not really a reg (or at all of one), but the most code I ever used in a game was my pure code game, with 671 lines of code. However, a good hundred or so were for the website-blocker, right-click disabler, and mochibot, so it was probably about 570 of actual game code.

re: Copious amounts of code?

Back from my three day vacation :D happy new years everybody and whatnot .Whats new?

Anyway, my biggest game has to be the first i ever made. Called "Rock Adventures", entirely API and poorly executed, standing at probably 800 lines of code on one frame. Totally disgusting... I was such a n00b, now i could probably do it even better with 1/4 of that ammount :P

Not so Merry has around 300 lines of code. That being code on santa + code on frame & functions + code on guards + code on presents + code on switches + code on doors + code on walls x2 :P I know, im a terrible coder... (first game i EVER completed)

Irony

Actually Johnny, a lot of their word usage is correct. The word ironic has irony in it. Using your sited source of dictionary.com we get these definitions of ironic:

ironic
1. containing or exemplifying irony: an ironic novel; an ironic remark.
2. coincidental; unexpected: It was ironic that I was seated next to my ex-husband at the dinner.

Definition two states ironic as synonymous with coincidental. If you feed that into Blaze's use, for example we get this:

Before:

btw shirt, ironically enough, when i was coming back home i saw a turtle on the road and i was like " :D shirt turtle"

After:

btw shirt, coincidentally enough, when i was coming back home i saw a turtle on the road and i was like " :D shirt turtle"

The sentence is still structured right, and the meaning doesn't change. Just a little definition mishap.

I don't like that definition, as it's not completely true. I think it's one of those words that has been misused so damned much that's its literal meaning has been overtaken by its suggestive meaning.

Such as argument. (Which really isn't a negative thing at all...)

The language guy agrees...

http://thelanguageguy.blogspot.com/2006/06/be gging-question_17.html

An irony is a coincidence... but it's much more than that.

It's an opposite parellel.

This great man..great, great man... has the best definition ever since it clarifies the difference between coincidence and irony.

"Irony is "a state of affairs that is the REVERSE of what was to be expected;
a result OPPOSITE TO and IN MOCKERY OF the appropriate result."

For instance: a diabetic, on his way to buy insulin, is killed by a runaway truck. He is the victim of an accident. If the truck was delivering sugar, he is the victim of an oddly poetic coincidence. But if the truck was delivering insulin, ah! Then he is the victim of an irony." ~ George Carlin

So, in our previous example... with Blaze seeing a turtle and thinking "shirt turtle," that's simply a coincidence... there is no "opposite" expected result. It's simply a coincidence.

No result opposite to what was to be expected.
No mockery of what was to be expected.

No irony.

It has to meet ALL of the criteria, or it's just a coincidence.

I guess dictionary.com didn't really elaborate on that defintion.

I will go directly against them and say that a woman sitting next to her ex husband at the dinner is not ironic... one bit.

Now, if she was only seated next to her ex husband because his new wife had to cancel last minute...

Opposite of the expected. (His wife was supposed to be next to him)
Direct Mockery. (haha, all the husbands and wives are sitting together, and you're in his new wife's seat..noob)

That's irony.

Seriously, do some real reseach and see how the word has been misused so much that the meaning has fundamentally changed....
