I remember your AS wars bot, good times. Speaking of which, I was really looking forward to the 2009 AS wars by gust. How come it never took off? We should do one of those again so we can actually have something to procrastinate for. Being a procrastinator sucks when you've got nothing to do.
Before I forget, how many of you actually use AS3 now? There seem to be a lot of AS2 threads around still :P

Oh look, another coder who dropped out of a game in the final stages of development cause he's shit.
Family reunion.

We should definitely do one of those again, as long as it's AS2 :D
*sigh* I lost my epic flash skills, so I probably wouldn't fare well, but I can always try.
Wait, that was the last as: wars? Can't you guys do anything without me? >.<
They were the most fun I ever had at coding
I can't even remember gusts, but wasn't it AS3? I sure as fuck was too lazy to learn AS3 just to participate.
Sam: I take it you still haven't found a sponsor? :/
AS wars was epic. I remember just sitting there entranced. I might just make one that orbits round the centre and fires every so often and see if it actually gets anywhere in the competition :3
If there's ever another AS war we have to make sure the fights stay on the internet for more than a year. It's so depressing to go over the old threads and find nothing but broken links and deleted imageshack files. Next time someone's gotta record them and upload to youtube or store them in google code or something. Even just making a mailing list and sending the .swf file to all the participants by email would be good enough. Anything that doesn't end up deleting the files after a few months for space saving.

Why not ask Tom to host them then?
I dunno what he's like with things like that but if the videos aren't too big in file size i doubt he'd mind.

Great idea,
All of the files of all the as: wars till now are probably smaller in size than all the "lolfirstanimationlook" submitted in a day, so if he's interested in the idea I doubt he'd have a problem with it.
Maybe he can even advertise it a bit, you know..

AS2 is a dying breed, put it out gracefully and make the competition be in as3.
I remember one of the AS wars a couple of years ago that I think AuthorBlues won, and everytime he won he would do a victory lap. Haha. Damn, I wish it was 6 years ago again. This forum was good.
Ludum Dare
Anyone ever been in one? They give you a theme when time starts and you have 48 hours to develop a game in said theme. Any language goes. I decided to use FlashPunk after having only heard about it that same day. So i had no idea what I was doing.
Ultimately, my shitty art and lack of game design ideas made me give up on my entry, but at least I stumbled into the FlashPunk framework which is awesome and probably better than flixel (haven't tried it either).
Here's a ~3 hour-ish timelapse of my development and here is the resulting swf

Hold space to dig and arrows to move.
The theme was discovery and initially I thought about digging for treasure but I wasn't sure how to give people clues because I sure as hell wasn't going to make them dig out every single block of every map. So i gave up.
Would it be possible for someone to develop a Flash down-saving program? Would that even be possible?

Maybe, like I said, I haven't been here in ages.
I (along with many others), however, can't code anything decent in AS3, while the coders who know AS3 most likely know AS2 too. So making it AS2 would allow more people to participate and have fun, and that is, atleast for me, the only thing of importance of the as: wars.
In the 2 years I haven't been here all this could've changed though, but this is how I remember it being back in 2008 and what I've seen so far.
Also: all the AS3: wars failed horribly, I wouldn't want that to happen again.

I haven't used AS2 in 5 years or so, AS3 is cleaner and more powerful, there's no reason not to use it.
I used AS2 for my first few months, because somethings that I read here intimidated me.
Never looking back.
Fair enough guys, I guess I should try to learn AS3 instead then. I'm quite surprised everyone made the transition, but I guess it was to be expected. :]

I was pretty anti changing to AS3 but when I decided to give it a try, it only took a couple of hours to learn.
It took longer to get used to of course but no more than a week.
The performance difference itself is reason enough to switch.
Alright, that's good to know. I tried when it first came out, but I didn't want to learn everything all over again so I kinda gave up. And now that I lost most of my AS2 skills I might as well start over with AS3.
So, any good sites/tutorials you recommend or should I just read through AS3: main?

I asked this a few pages back and had to find out myself. Here's what I found:
Great blog (updated daily)
'Avoider' type tutorial. Covers a lot of ground and is a good intro to OOP.
Foundation Flash
Senocular. Helps with transition from AS2 to AS3.
Interesting blog, lots in the as3 category.
Good old Kirupa.
UNITY 3D GAMES
Kongregate is now accepting Unity files, this is the pretty good 3d engine used for many games already. You will need to install a separate plug-in but it means more games can be submitted.
"We are announcing the support of Unity games on our site and have a giant contest with $25,000 in cash prizes spread over 10 winning games! Plus, you don't even have to host it yourself in an iframe - we're directly accepting *.unity3d files."
Not sure if Newgrounds will do this? Has anyone used Unity 3D?

Briefly. I did a bit of modelling in there and checked out some of the preset scripts. It seems like a good platform for 3D indie developers.

I haven't used it, but I've heard it's a little clunky. It does build for Iphone, ipad, and android too I think. I don't know maybe its worth taking a look at.
Theres too many damn platforms right now. I'd imagine that unity will take a hit once adobe releases molehill, though.

You can develop web applications for free, if you want to make something for the iPhone or android you have to pay, I know the Gorillaz game, plastic beach was made in unity, i was impressed with that.
Hopefully flash will advance in 3d applications that are fully optimised for web and mobile devices.

Oh, thanks a lot, those links are great.
I'm not really interested in 'serious programming' anymore(maybe some, but I'm way too busy lately and I'm not as motivated as I used to be, it's also the reason I didn't really want to learn as3), but I suppose that if I want to participate in any as: wars I'll have to know some as3.
Thanks again for the links, good sir.

You should also check out the sherlock holmes soundtrack [of the recent movie] if you are into buying movie soundtracks. I donno I like it!
