Do you think that eventually all movies will be on blu-ray only, and CD's will be replaced by DVD's for music? Possibly an even higher quality of disc replacing blu-ray too?
I've seen the rise and fall of everything from Betamax and 8 tracks.. the fall of vinyl LPs.. to HD-DVDs (not Bluray) and am generally on the forefront of new technology, because I absolutely love it.
My personal opinion is that there is a great chance (Not definite obviously, or I'd be rich playing the market) that many things will simply move to downloads and hard drives, and we'll lose our physical media.
The main argument is 'quality.' There is always a trade off though. Look at the majority of slightly tech-savvy people out there. What do you own more of? Songs on CDs or MP3s? MP3 quality is ghastly compared to a CD, but... it's good enough, so most of us choose the MP3 route because its portable, easy and gets the job done.
Another argument is album art... having a CD in your possession, ect.. ect.. They'll find a way around that. The ease of distribution for digital media gives companies a huge hard on as well. No sitting on inventory, manufacturing items.. all the fun stuff that comes with trying to sell a product.
Personally, I don't think Blu-Ray discs will stick around for long, but if they did - they would probably be a more expensive alternative to DVD. And thats it.
They're much, much higher quality for both audio and video than a DVD is. The video isn't too apparent until you start getting into 40"+ TVs (and the larger the size, the more noticeable it becomes.. ) and the audio becomes more apparent the more channels you have (5.7, 7.1, 9.1) and the better quality speaker you have.
If you play a Bluray and a DVD on a 32" TV with stereo sound, you may not notice even a small difference.
I originally banked on HD-DVD and own a player. Backed them because they allowed other companies to manufacture HD-DVDs. Bluray didn't. The moment Bluray started licensing their software, I knew HD-DVD was dead. And it is...
Me and the girl just sold 90% of my DVD collection. Think we had 200 of them or so, and sold the entire box of them for $50.00. We kept a few that were hard to replace and that's about it. Got 8 Bluray for christmas (boondock saints, band of brothers mini, fight club, star trek and some others) and really, next time I go to buy a movie, it will be on Bluray. The price has come WAY down.
Now.. 4 of those Bluray (50% of them) actually came with a second disk to load onto my PC/iPhone/whatever a digital, high-quality version of the movie.
So now, they're just coming with it. Soon, I wouldn't be surprised if they replaced it. I've downloaded probably 50 movies unto my Xbox hard drive (some just rentals) and many of them have been available in HD, and sit at about 5gb.
Terabyte hard drives are down to like $100.00. Entire houses are networked. (My computer regularly talks to my PC) Everything is getting cheaper. Internet is getting faster. Storage is getting easy.
If Bluray doesn't replace DVDs, HD format saved on hard drives will.
Onto Video games... the other removable media. Companies like OnLive are having their way with that as well, and if I were a major developer, that would look very tasty. Ubisoft and others seem to think so, and have already signed up.
Won't be long.
