That lags because of the lines drawn. Do a fill instead using the hit points for edges.
Anyway, you're doing it wrong. Glaiel meant 3d raytracing that is used for rendering. You don't need to trace every adjacent ray in 2d, for what you have it'd be better to even do it naively for each vertex (or particle, in the case of circles).

Looking at your demo, I think I may have made a ray tracer a while ago without realising that it was one, for the sake of dynamic lighting in a game. Is that technically a ray tracer, or does a ray tracer have to individually check each ray rather than working out where it will hit? In my thing it calculates the tangents of the of the circles to the mouse position and draws a shadow behind it.
Raytracing is 3d graphics. A method of rendering by tracing rays of light backwards from the lens toward light sources.
