I posted this in the programming forums too but didn't know if they knew a lot about photoshop and web design...

buuuuuuuuut is it a MUST to check 'web colors' in photoshop's color pallette when designing or drawing any background template, layout, or images for a website? I feel like that's only for text generated with the html code, but who knows then why there's a web colors check box in the color pallette?

I thought maybe I could use whatever colors I wanted (just to make a layout in photoshop and slice it up into table cells) but maybe not

thanks.

Web-safe is a relic of 256-colour days, when computers with Thousands and Millions of colours had to conform to its goofy 256 colour cousin. Generally it's a good idea to make sure your contrast and colour look fine on different monitors (especially with darker and lighter designs with little contrast) but 256 web-safe mode is generally not important unless you find funny reasons to use it... or have a device or something nearly a decade old.

Hi there!

Alright, sweet, thanks. I'll be sure not to to use too little contrast then.

I'm really new to action script, and I've been reading a few tutorials and I created a Mario Star Shooter Game. You can play the beat below; What do you think? Add pointers before I submit. Do you think it's sponsorship worthy? Etc.

Play BETA now

Tab + Enter = win.
That needs fixing.
I'm not sure it's the kind of thing a sponsors looking for but no reason you can't try.

Widescreen

Games like this look much better, whilst the old 4:3 ratio doesn't look as great. Overall i think it will be good, but it needs the right flash to make sense.

Killing Floor

Anyone else got it? I was given it so if anyone wants to massacre the undead pm me :).

Widescreen Shenanigans
Need to remember to allow for this when I mess about with StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE...

What will that do the stage exactly? Not allow you to make it bigger when they click the biggify(lol) option?

I imagine it'll expand the stage area but not scale it (like in the preview mode), so you'll need to stick in a fuck off big border to stop it looking wrong.

It controls how Flash handles the window not being the dimensions it's designed for. Most will be on EXACT_FIT (so that it deforms both ways to match the new window size), but I do a lot of generic things that are designed to work on a Top Left Aligned Non Deforming flash window... so that the window deforms but not the content.

Helps with things like Fullscreen and full flash websites (because hey, doesn't it suck when a Flash site either chooses to be an arbitrary size on your screen or deforms to a ridiculous dimension because they put it on width=100%?), but I've been assuming only one size only for a lot of projects...

16:9 is good for flash movies, but I think the ratio of games should depend on the gameplay more than the visuals. Usually flash games aren't fullscreen, so it's not like you need to adapt to the users' screen sizes (although it's safe to keep under 800x600)

I'm using 16:10 atm, because it is a game that concentrates more on horizontal movement, but also most people now buy 16:10 monitors.

personally as long as a game doesnt become too 'tall' im fine with whatever proportions people make. Omg it drives me nuts when i have to scroll down to see the last 10 px of the game area, even if its unimportantttttt.

O dear that would suck

The widescreen is a neat feature, i always used pop-up and now i dun has to, but that still means i have to stay on the same page while watching a movie (before i'd put it on the side and scroll around other stuff, visit you guys XD

its probably for the better XD Fulps always up to something lol

one problem with widescreen is it makes certain animations look worse then usual. i find a lot of people on this site if you zoom in enough on a freeze frame of their flash it starts looking like shit, but since it's so small you can't really notice it. with the new enlargen feature it's easier to notice these imperfections, and i personally thought that it made sandwich look really bad.

You can't use tabs to watch a flash + browse other sites. He means he'd have the popup at the side of the browser.. that's the same thing as I do :P I'll keep using popup for when I want to do that, but I prefer this to the lightbox thing they had.
