This is a great example of how maturity affects your judgement. The spirit was actually the worst movie I've ever seen in my life. Please don't waste ANY money on it.

The Day The Earth Stood Still Review

No amount of words can describe how much this movie sucks. The next time I hear the word 'change' I'm going to kill a baby.

Ehh... the plot and dialogue was pretty bad, but it was just cool to look at. The red black and white is cool, but you know, whatever.

I think he said he liked it, then read some online reviews and changed his opinion to fit in with the popular opinion.

Imagine an arrow moving in empty space. You note its position at a given time, then you wait a while and note the position again. This position can be noted at any number of dimensions - 3d / 2d / 1d, it makes no difference. Now assuming that the arrow has travelled a distance greater than 0, you can divide the distance it travelled by two. Now divide the distance you got by two again, again and again. You can theoretically keep on doing that an infinite amount of times on a geometrical scale and obtain infinitely small values.

But if the arrow had to pass through an infinite amount of points, does it not mean it took it an infinite amount of time to get where it is?

My brother told me about this paradox, and as I obviously disagree that whether this might be true in geometry or not, it definitely doesn't apply to reality. Is it just impossible to get an infinite amount of points between the two points? The strange thing here is when you try to "add up" all the infinitely small values you got together to get the original distance as a result. inf x 1/inf =? Where is the original distance even defined in there? Now remember im just a human n all (unlike gust) so he will probably find a flaw in my argument, i need more time to think about this, and not at 3 AM like now.

Yes, because Infinity divided by any finite number (in this case, 2) is still infinity.
But theoretically you can't travel to an infinite number of points.

Haha, that was a good thinker. :]

I think it's just a problem in geometry, whether it even makes sense to divide a distance an infinite amount of times and get a practical result. it will only travel an infinite amount of time between the two points if the distance is infinite, supposing the arrow always moves. So the problem is whether there is an infinite amount of points between the two points, and why it supposedly means that it makes the distance too, infinite.

ah wait, actually what my brother said as a conclusion is not that it travelled an infinite amount of time, but that the arrow doesn't move at all,

Then how can you explain that you can divide the distances into an infinite set of values? Or are you saying that in our universe, there are only defined "spots" where matter can be, and not anywhere between them, thus demining the thought of infinite amount of points?

Sorry. :]

At 12/30/08 07:48 PM, Toast wrote: Then how can you explain that you can divide the distances into an infinite set of values?

Because a distance between two points is a finite number.
Divide that finite number by two again, and you'll keep getting finite numbers
an infinite amount of times, but you wont reach infinity itself.

Infinity (non-finite) will remain infinity if divided into two.

There's a difference between an infinite distance, and
an infinite amount of points you've traveled to to get that distance.

Wait...I think I know what you're saying..
let me think about it a little more, lol.
The doctor says I'm a slow thinker. :/

How so? since the distance between each of those points is finite, so d*infinity

According to gust, this problem has no solution, which is kinda unsatisfactory but it's still fun to think about this.

but at least it was fun to think about. :]

You can travel 4 feet 5 times, and in the end you'll have traveled 20 feet.
You can travel 6 feet 1 time, and in the end you'll have traveled 6 feet.
You can also travel 5 feet an infinite amount of times, and you'll have traveled an infinite amount of feet.

The difference is one is the amount of points you've traveled to,
and one is the distance you are away from your starting point due to
the number of points you've traveled to.

I wrote a giant paragraph babbling about this, but
mother had to use the computer, and it was magically deleted.

According to gust, this problem has no solution, which is kinda unsatisfactory but it's still fun to think about this.

Good, because now I feel like thinking about something with an answer. :]
Or something that doesn't make my head hurt a little, lol.
But it was indeed fun. I'll probably end up thinking about this
while i'm trying to sleep.

New Years superstitionssss

hah my friends always give me shit for this and maybe im partly insane.. but its always been passed down to me from generation to generation.. anyway one of my 'superstitions' or whatever during new years is to make sure i have cash in my pockets... according to my grandmother and my great grandmother before that ... the legend/or whatever is that if you head into the new year with cash in your pocket, you are ensured a financially stable year ahead of you....

maybe im forever paranoid but the last 2 years ive done it ive done well... maybe its a placebo effect. maybe not.. but whatever the case i thought id share that with you allll

*BTW it ruins the superstition if you have credit cards instead of actual cash... also it has to be yours.. you cant borrow it from someone as the clock turns 12.

My wallet have never been as well filled as it is right now, much thanks to relatives who are bad at giving Christmas gifts. So, I suppose that I am going to have a pretty good financial year then :D

I think that I will bring all my money over to my online poker account the same minute that the new year kicks in, if I go broke you owe me Luis!

Like every now and then, randomly, large FLAs will export with horrible, ear-piercing scratchy versions of the sounds I want them to play, and it requires a whole lot of luck and restarting flash to fix the problem. It sucks cause it means on every export I have to make sure EVERY sound works right. Ugg. Pain in the ass that someone should fix.

well thats never really happened to me by accident. though once just because i was curious i turned down the sound quality a whole bunch (8kb), and the sound was so bad it hurt my ears. maybe you did the sound quality on the stream audios, but forgot to set it for the event audios. sometimes people forget that the audio set quality for the two are in different places.

No its nothing I did. I always always always turn both to 64 kbps stereo cause I'm an audio guy.

It's RANDOM when it makes it screechy so I know it's a flash bug.

I've never had screechy sound problems in Flash...

Actually, i did once, but,
that's because i set a SoundTransform.volume property to 75, instead of 0.75.
I know it's probably nothing you did, but,
that might explain the problem a little.
