Whoa. What calculator do you have? Most can only do 9.999999999 * 10^99. However, 10^157 is too small to be correct, isn't it?

Well i figured that if
a regular googol is
1 x 10^100
You could apply the factorial to the 100, and
that would be the number of zeroes the number would have.
But now i look like a total dumbass because i didn't really
think it through that much. Oh well.

:/
I'll solve this mystery one day.! :D

no it's going to be a lot larger than that. I found this approximation online for it.

ln(z!) ~= (1/2)*ln(2*pi) + (z + 1/2)*ln(z) - z

= .5ln(2pi) + (10^100 + .5)*ln(10^100)- 10^100

= 2.2925 x 10^102

so

ln(10^100!) = (2.2925 x 10^102)

10^100! = e^(2.2925 x 10^102)

= 10^(9.9566 x 10^101)

which is the number 10 with almost 100 times as many zeros as a googolplex (which is a ton more than 100 times a googolplex, it's 2 orders of magnitude larger for just the numbers of zeros, which means it's a googolplex SQUARED times as large)

I found this also for estimating factorials...

n! > sqrt (2*pi*n) * (n/e)^n
n! < sqrt (2*pi*n) * (n/e)^(n+1/12n)

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2008-10-05 14:12:58

450 is 4.5x10^2, yet the factorial of 450 is 1.73336873... × 10^1,000. you can't just take the number of powers and calculate its factorial in order to determine the number of zero's. a googol! probably wouldn't fit in a NG post. i mean, a googol! is the product of 10^100 multiplication, one of them being * 9.999....^99. so already taking one multiplication out of the 10^100 multiplications, we have over 200 zero's. now imagine doing that with a googol other numbers. it's beyond human conception

function power(n, x):Number{ g=n; for(i=0; i < x; i ++){ g = n*g; } return g; } function factorial(n):Number{ r = 1; for(i=0; i < n ; i ++){ r *= i; } return r; } trace(factorial(power(10,100)));

unfortunately flash regards everything > 170! as Infinity.

for really large numbers logarithms work better than square roots.

Don't think so. When you do it you're meant to deal with the powers before the multiplication.
e.g. 2 * 10^10 is different 20^10.

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2008-10-05 14:38:22

fair enough. makes sense. i knew there was something wrong about it.

if you give me small numbers i can usually try to think it out more logically, like go in full depths of the example you just gave 2*10^10 and 20^10, but when it's something as huge as a googol my brain gets all fuzzy :p

let's start with really basic stuff. then we can move unto more complicated things.

here's something our maths teacher gave us and he said only those who finished all the exercises can do it. anyone who is 14 years old or more should be able to solve it.
