This is a tutorial on how to get, install, and use the GIMP, an image manipulation program. It will include some pictures, for visual aid.

First off, go to SourceForge.net and search for "the gimp".

The first result you should get is the one labeled "GTK+ and The GIMP installers for Windows", located here. Click this link, unless you have a different operating system, in which case you can visit the GIMP's webpage, Gimp.org, and download the Mac OS X or Unix version of the GIMP.

Now, after downloading your version of the GIMP, it's time to setup and install.

Take important note here: You MUST install the GTK+ Environment before installing the GIMP, otherwise the GIMP will NOT work.

After installing the GTK+ Environment, it's time to install the GIMP.

At the 6th screen on the install setup, it will ask you to select the files that are to be associated with the GIMP, and will open with the GIMP.

The types listed are as follows:

Adobe PhotoShop Image (.psd, .pdd)
Alias|Frontwave PowerAnimator (.matte, .mask, .alpha, .als, .pix)
CompuServe GIF (.gif)
Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (.dicom, .dcm)
Jasc PaintShopPro Image (.psp)
JPEG Image (.jpg, .jpeg, .jpe)
KISS CEL (.cel)
Netpbm format (.pnm, .ppm, .pgm, .pbm)
Portable Network Graphics (.png)
PostScript (.ps)
Scaleable Vector Graphics (.svg)
SUN Raster Image (.ras, .im1, .im8, .im24, .im32, .rs)
Tagged Image File (.tif, .tiff)
TrueVision Targa (.tga)
Windows and OS/2 Bitmaps (.bmp, .rle, .dib)
Windows Metafile (.wmf)
X10 and X11 Bitmap (.xbm, .ico, .bmp)
X Pixmap (.xpm)
X Window Dump (.xwd)
ZSoft Paintbrush Image (.pcx)

Select any of these that you want to open with and be associated with the GIMP. Alternatively, you can press "Select All" to have them all open with and be associated with the GIMP. In the image below, you can see I've selected Compuserve GIF, Adobe PhotoShop image, Jasc PaintShopPro Image, Portable Network Graphics, JPEG Image, and KISS CEL.

Now, before I start showing you how to use the GIMP, the following should be noted:

If you have a processor with HyperThreading, the GIMP will clash up and freeze every time with it, when it gets to a specific file. In order to use the GIMP if you have a processor with HyperThreading, you will have to go into your BIOS and disable HyperThreading. If you don't know how to, consult your manual for your computer/motherboard, or

Anyway, continuing on. In the following set of images you will see I have labeled each button the GIMP's interface, so you know what each one is and what it does.

Okay then, now that you know what all the main buttons do, let's take a peek at the things below the buttons that are of importance. These are the main buttons you will be using when you use the GIMP (most likely), so here's each one and a brief description of what it does.

Now, this is really the only other main thing you will need to know when using the GIMP, everything else is either stuff you will not use often, if ever, and things that are pretty self-explanatory.

Here is the section labeled Xtns, under the Script-Fu section, you can find many, many cool things to go with your images, kind of like filters are for Photoshop.

I thought all the binaries were available on Gimp.org anyway...

I'm pretty sure they are. I think they link up to SourceForge though.

...Just follow the big links on every page I linked to. It's not like you're gonna trip up and suddenly download viruses en masse, you know?

Not to be mean or anything, but what the hell does the GIMP program do? Is it a free download compared to Photoshop?

Basically it's free graphics software, similar to Photoshop, but nowhere near as good.

But it's the best you'll get for free...

Nothing is as good as Photoshop, which is why Adobe can get away with charging $700 for it, and $150 for upgrades to newer versions. Paint Shop Pro is an okay alternative but it's like $150-$300, so GIMP and/or Paint.NET would be better choices. Besides, you can do pretty much anything in something like the GIMP, or even MS Paint, that you could do in Photoshop. It's just the time and skill that it takes, is the difference.

So which is better for making a sig. photoshop or GIMP.

Well both would do a good job, but if you're asking which is the better program out of the two - Photoshop of course, there's a reason why that costs money and GIMP is free ;)
