It's really what keeps me on the site. I can take breaks from the BBS no sweat. But depositing... I dunno what it is about these damned points. They're nearly worthless here, it's ultra challenging, so I love it.

I mean... it's been three full years since I B/P'd actively. And that was only because I had a job where I could keep on the portal while working to vote. Exp is so much of a slower gain, but for some reason I'm smitten with it. Until lvl 56, that is. 5 years from now when I reach that amazing looking skull, I may well stop. Well... maybe 10 exp from the next level. Just in case they redesign the site again.

Fun, but ultimately pointless. Isn't that the real irony of this site?

You mean if there will only ever be one Level 60 user and we start on that ridiculous climb, where the experience parameters keep on getting further and further apart? That was one of NG's more dark moments.

I don't know that I can find anything ironic about it... but I'd say fun and ultimately pointless about sums this place up. And that's 5 years talkin'.

I was talking about compared to most games or sites where you gain points toward higher levels. Newgrounds is the only one I can think of where it takes three months of daily visits simply to gain ONE.

But that's because it's not the primary purpose of the site. Anyway, I dunno about abandoning the old exp system. I supposed it's allowed me to reach my leveling goal faster... but I'd now only have 13 years left to get to the level 26 I so desired. Except, redesign. : (

I can definitely relate. Many users may see depositing as a "pointless" jesture but for some of us, there's a certain small fun factor in reaching the next step. I too have a goal of reaching lvl 55 and timely ending my deposits but as gfox and Coop pointed out a while back, the balance of power may be in effect again by then. I guess in the end, it may just come down to how much devotion/time you may have for Newgrounds.

Anybody have any regrets? ;-)

I missed a deposit a couple weeks ago because my girlfriend was making a lot of drama that day.

Now I fall behind a rank every time wismty deposits in the early AM and I don't.

GOD MY LIFE IS LIKE THE WORST!!!

Can everyone just like, take a break for one day? Let me catch back up?

Why if isn't RageVI. . . Are you sure you've missed a deposit? I've always noticed you were 40 points behind me for quite some time... unless I missed a deposit as well. Hmm.

After thinking about the Pentalist and EXP update schedules, I have decided that after the two updates are made on 27th September, the two will no longer be updated on the same day. So after the next update, there'll be an EXP update in two weeks time. A fortnight later, the Pentalist will be updated and then both updates will be done four weeks later after their latest ones.

However, due to real life events, there are some Saturdays where I won't be able to make the updates, so the first EXP update on its own had to be delayed by a week. Regardless of whether I go out on the 20th or not, I decided to delay both updates by a week since the schedule seems to work better that way. So here's the dates for the upcoming updates:

27th September - Both EXP and Pentalist updates
18th October - EXP update
25th October - Pentalist update
8th November - EXP update
22nd November - Pentalist update
6th December - EXP update
20th December - Pentalist update

While I said the updates would be done every 2 weeks, it's not very likely for me to make an update on the 11th October due to real life events, so I resorted to delaying that update for a week and then doing the next one three weeks later (after that, it'll be done every four weeks).

OK, that's enough of the update schedules, about switching webservers, I have done that and you can now find the EXP list on my Bravehost site as well as my Pentalist updates. The only thing that's been bothering me are the ads and other crap put on the site. I can pay to have these ads removed, but I'll only do that if the ads are a pain for the majority of you. If you all can deal with the crap put on the site, that's fine, but if not, I'll be willing to pay some money to make it look better.

Another thing, you can still see the EXP List on Lycos, but I don't intend to remove any stuff from the site just yet incase everyone prefers the lists on Lycos rather than Bravehost. I'm thinking of posting the updates on both sites incase one fails to work for anyone here.

You should be receiving quite a boost shortly - I was stuck outside the top 300 and the top 250 for a while with slow patches of no missed depositers. When I cracked the top 250, I've steadily gone up quite a few ranks in quite a short space. Maybe you'll catch them in the next few months and we'll see that improve your standing greatly.

We'll see what happens in the next few months then. Right now, there are some people I am certain to take over by 27th September. I should pass 5 or 6 more users by then. :)

But there's so many damn users above me that aren't missing any deposits. Of course, some will give up eventually, but right now, it doesn't look like any of them are going to give up anytime soon. Oh well, I'll just focus on the next few users in front of me and see how they do.
Like the scenario with myself and KWAS then :P

Yeah, I'm surprised but glad KWAS stopped depositing. I'd love to pass him soon. :D

He'll get it if he mentions it to me once more.
What, the top 50?

...Must I make that huge picture?

Also, I'm a top 50 Protector, top 50 Reviewer, top 50 Audio Reviewer, top 50 Flash Review Response gainer and a top 50 list maker.

They're easier to get. Top 50 is almost impossible for the both of us. XP

I never mentioned anything about the top 50 for experience, which I'm slowly closing in on...

I can see! For the first time in I-don't-know-how-long, I can actually see the update! And, like I said before, I have some a few easy rank gains coming up too, which is always nice. However, I also noticed something scary: I'm only about 800 exp (which is more than two months away, but still) from overtaking Vash-The-Stampede!

X_X

After Wade and bigbadron, he's probably the biggest "scalp" I've ever (well, technically, "will, in the near future, ever have") managed collect. Never thought I'd overtake a guy like him, to be honest. Still, many thanks Bahamut, for maintaining the list and, specially, for taking the time to re-create the site in a new host. Cheers!

Oh, I'm guessing quite a few of us (possibly myself included) will have regrets sometime in the future... but right now, we're so caught up in the <exageration on> adrenaline rush <exageration off> that we don't notice things we might have reasons to regret.

<j/k>But seriously, I also imagine that a few of us will wear the levels, ranks and badges we've earned proudly as, well, err... as badges when NG becomes the multinational, VR making corporation (akin to Blade Runner), complete with standing army that will come to dominate the world in a couple of years thanks to its hipnotic flashes (think hipnotoad of Futurama fame, but nastier).

After all, in this "bright future", old users such as ourselves will become the ruling elite! I mean, that's the reason we all keep depositing, right? To become the ruling elite in the new world order? I mean, no one in their right minds would keep depositing for X (where X equals to 3, 4, 5...) years straight just for fun, right?

Sorry I didn't get back to this question sooner. I had thoughts about it and while I greatly appreciate your offer, I won't be taking it. I'm a bit concerned about some unfortunate events that might happen and I feel having a web host of my own is the best for me. Another reason why I'm not going to take the offer is because my friend has given me a web host on his site and I feel one of these offers is enough. However, I will not be using his site for stat purposes, but rather for Flash purposes whenever I've got several good ideas on what to put on the site.

Still, thank you very much for your offer, but I'm fine with what I have right now.

Well, there might be a slip up when I'm away in London or anywhere else, but besides that, no breaks. Infact, I wouldn't have been bothered missing three deposits in July when I went to see Iron Maiden as a present from my sister. The missed deposits would have been well worth it, but my depositer was able to get his job done, so I can't complain. Another missed deposit I would have been OK with was when I went to Alton Towers a few weeks ago. :)

EXP update #4 is now available! (for the Lycos site, click here)

Like I said on the Pentalist thread, I'm updating this today rather than tomorrow due to real life stuff happening. Therefore, I won't have the time to make the updates tomorrow, so today is a better time.

Oh, and incase you're not sure yet, anyone who've gained 320 EXP or less have definitely missed at least one deposit. :)

Like I said a few weeks ago, the next EXP update will be on 18th October!

Ah, no more updating both the Pentalist and EXP updates on the same day!

Thanks for the update, Bahamut. Very tasty :)

228 Coop83 | 16,090 | 340 | +7
229 Speed24601 | 16,080 | 270 | +2

A good spread here, with bigbadron, moongod and agent66 all ripe for the picking over the next few weeks (or is it a month, I can't remember). Still, I've got TimScheff taking the role of my tormentor this month, now that long time occupier of this role, AnzRage has fallen from pace, to move 1 deposit behind me. I get the feeling that Tim won't be in front of me at the next update.

Of course, a little mention should be made of how I passed KWAS this month, as that's 1 more guy on the VP list that I've gotten ahead of. 8 more deposits and I've cleared the next one, moongod :P

On other news, I've just noticed two very closely related facts: ramagi is getting very close to overtaking no less a person than Shrapnel! And humantarget52 is also getting <very> close to leaving the top 10 users too.

Because he hadn't deposited on the day that the stats were pulled last time, which he subsequently went on to do, plus he has deposited on the day that stats were pulled this time. People who collect their experience in the same window each day - a metronome like me, for example, will always gain a uniform amount.

That's not a display of commitment, to be honest. His commitment to depositing in the aftermath of Ike is, considering the power outages he's suffering from

Funny enough, I didn't notice his 360 gain until you brought it up. It's very strange for him to get that much considering the most anyone should have got is 350 (for depositing later on the day the previous update was done and depositing before this update was done on the day). All I'm guessing is how he timed it very well whilst I was pulling the stats. But here's the weirder part: He gained 280 EXP on the previous and gained 360 EXP on this update. He shouldn't have more than 350 EXP, so really, it must be his timing.

HE WAS AFTER THE FUCKING 360 GAIN FOR HIS FUCKING LOVE FOR 36!

It's nothing to do with his deposit dedication, it's to do with the fact that he managed to get 10 more EXP than (what I thought was) the maximum limit.

Soooo... around 2 years ago I was in the 80s or 90s.

When was I actually back around #200? I guess it was a little longer than "a couple of years."

Maybe.... late 2004 or early-mid 2005, I'd guess? Thus..... probably 3-4 years, TBH.

So it may not be as far away for you and Coop as you seem to think, that's all.
But there's so many damn users above me that aren't missing any deposits. Of course, some will give up eventually, but right now, it doesn't look like any of them are going to give up anytime soon. Oh well, I'll just focus on the next few users in front of me and see how they do.

;_;

The problem's fixed (by itself according to liljim o__O), but due to a user having all his posts erased, the thread was shown to have 1625 pages, but it actually had 1611 pages.

Wild.

I find it hard to believe that in 5 years, 50 users ahead of you in exp will not fail to deposit at least once. So... just make sure you're one of the <50 who manages to make every deposit in that timespan, and all shall be well.
Of course I'll make sure I'm one of those users, but what about that odd one missed deposit that might happen due to short breaks (i.e. Going to London while my depositer misses a deposit by accident)? Meh, I'll be fine anyway. :)

Yes. I picked up most of them for 25 cents at the newstand. Yours and Coop's is the only one I actually have a subscription to because it's so much cheaper at 5 cents each.
You're going at prices here? Well, just as long as you enjoy our newspapers, it's all right. :)

It was meant to be a compliment. You devious bastards undercut the competition and thus outsell them. :::nods:::

Sigh... It's unfortunate to me that it's likely going to take me as much time as it took you to get from where I am now to where you are now just to get into the top 100.

;_;

You're well ahead of my alt alt gfox and of Coop, if it makes you feel any better.

I've been looking forward to top 200 for ages now. I love experience because it's like the Senate of NG's voting congress... every state's got equal opportunity.

And it's the highest prestige/reputation, too. Great metaphor... the Senate... heh.

Hitting top 200 after almost 5 years of activity on the site really makes you feel like you at least did something with the time spent here, but it's kind of obscene to me that there are 200 other users who have been equally as dedicated as I, only perhaps over LONGER spans of time.

But a few of them over just around as long as you, too.

It takes all kinds of deposterers.

Anyway, I popped in and saw this topic on the front page and was like "woah... did the list get revived? Sweet." I'd been wondering to whom the most immediate thorns in my side belonged for ages now. Really weirds me out to see that I'm getting close to passing people like bigbadron and Miikro. Users that used to be thousands of experience RANKS ahead of me.

List's been back up and running for awhile, before that me and iscrulz would occasionally just touch base with a portion of the list, but no serious regular updating was afoot for awhile, no.

Welcome back aboard the good ship explistipop.

And yep, that feeling of passing teh famed NG legends is always great.

It's really what keeps me on the site. I can take breaks from the BBS no sweat. But depositing... I dunno what it is about these damned points. They're nearly worthless here, it's ultra challenging, so I love it.

Bah. They're not worthless. They're as worthwhile as you feel they are, in your mind.

And VP may not really matter that much.... since such large volumes of people vote on shit in the end (and even the bulk of the first 200 votes even out the VPs of their voters).... but come on. Depostering = a higher exp stat, which is cool in and of itself, higher levels and level icons... and then the higher VP as well.

It's all "meaningless," but there's so many shiny things, who cares? #;-}>

I mean... it's been three full years since I B/P'd actively.

Good idea in case of scaling beginning again, yes. Stop just short of level 57, and that way as long as you check the site every month or so, you'll never leave level 56 (unless you want to).

At 9/7/08 01:30 AM, BR wrote: I can definitely relate.

Mmmmmm. level 55.

I look forward to that, too. But honestly... I can't see myself ending deposits.

I've still got February 2000 to January 2003 to make up for.

Meaning I've got to deposit forever, and then tack 3 more years of deposits on top of that.

It's a tough proposition. #;-}>

Anybody have any regrets? ;-)

I regret that I didn't deposit even just a FEW months more prior to discovering all the nifty daily things to do on the site in January 2003.... because then maybe I woulda tasted the greatnesses of levels 24 and 25 on the old 30-level NG system pre-redesign.

Now I never will.

Though I did once deposit for a level 24 account for Bedn for awhile, so that was... somewhat nice.

These regrets are offset by the relief of never having been level 23 on the old system.

Yay!

I guess the listage assembly is your main problem these days, anyway. So makes sense that you'd want to space them out a bit more.

You could always just update the lists less often, BTW. Do both every 2 months or something.

27th September - Both EXP and Pentalist updates
18th October - EXP update

You should be receiving quite a boost shortly - I was stuck outside the top 300 and the top 250 for a while with slow patches of no missed depositers. When I cracked the top 250, I've steadily gone up quite a few ranks in quite a short space. Maybe you'll catch them in the next few months and we'll see that improve your standing greatly.
We'll see what happens in the next few months then. Right now, there are some people I am certain to take over by 27th September. I should pass 5 or 6 more users by then. :)

That's just the icing on the cake, my man.

I've heard a lot about Vash-The-Stampede. I know he was active in the old NG days, but seems to be a forgotten user nowadays.

He was not only a major depositer, of course, but also a BBSer from back in the first year or so of the BBS's history. i.e. he predates my BBS participation, which didn't begin in January 2003.

Though there may have been some overlap. I mostly knew (of?) him by reputation, and by reading old threads he had posted in.

Good thing I keep on my toes and do my best to make sure I deposited my EXP for the day. Infact, when I was in Lanzarote for a week back in June, I went on the Internet cafe daily and checked if my EXP was deposited. However, for when I'm in London at my sister's flat, I don't bother checking NG and just hope my depositer gets my EXP done everyday until I'm back, although that'll change whenever I get a laptop.

EXP update #5 is now available!

From now on, I should be able to catch all the users who are level 29 or above, so no-one else should reach 10k EXP unnoticed.

If any users in front or behind you have gained 200 EXP or less, then they've definitely missed a deposit since the last update.

Enjoy the update everyone.

NEXT UPDATE: 8th November 2008
