Grats to Snowy Beast and DHT on their vp and rank up well done guys.

Thats harsh Bob, but i guess you gotta abide by the admins decision. But i have a small question, what about the people who already downloaded the program, would NG still see it as a threat even though its not widely distributed ?

I don't think so. They're set to cease functioning on the 23rd anyway. In James' email, he didn't catch on to the minimum refresh time = 60 secs bit, so he was quoting a worst case scenario of 100(users)*60(secs) = 6000 hits from the program per minute, which could definitely be construed as DOS attack.
I just wish he'd taken a moment to read the thread before he deleted it - in terms of server resources used, I'm not even sure that he's aware that there are many people who have the Portal set to reload at <60 second intervals using browser refreshers.
Ho hum, anyway, it's gone now. No great loss, and I guess I'll be heading back into Flash shortly to try and get one of my projects back on the road.

Bob. I have a question.

If you made the program clear-cut: 60 second intervals (not as quick as some people's refresh times are right now), no loading pages (so no missed ad-revenue), and only made the sound, then you think liljim wouldn't mind?

This, given the fact that many people use the RefreshEvery firefox program already, would make a lot more sense.

I dunno, I guess he is just looking it on a bigger scale then we are. Maybe this program could be for the Regulars and Members only?

What do you say? Hmm? Hmm? ^_^

Yeah, well, he helps run the site so he can fag up anything he fucking wants.

This liljim guy, does he own the internet? No. So why should you take it down? You spent the fucking time on it, you should reap the fucking rewards.

True he sent enough time on it and distributed it as he thought it would do more good than harm, but an admins word is the last word. You dont get on the wrong side of one of them unless you want your account deleted.

Now please stop posting silly things.

Understood Denvish buddy. Maybe he will see it eventually and realise his error, or he might see it and stand by his decision, after all, running the site is part of his job, if anything can fuck it up, he has the right to have his way.

See, the problem with this theory is that if you aren't confrontational, then you get a LOT more slack from people than if you are constantly up in their face.

You can't just let people go around fagging things up for you.

This is true, and you shouldn't take unwarranted shit from anyone, but at the same time, you won't get anywhere if YOU are the one fagging things up for others.

This liljim guy, does he own the internet? No.

This liljim guy, does he run Newgrounds? Yes.

So why should you take it down?

He didn't. Liljim did.

You spent the fucking time on it, you should reap the fucking rewards.

Denvish won't get any rewards from this. He is doing this cause he is a nice guy.

Good luck to you.

Dave, seriously, what's wrong with you? You are so fucking angry at everyone...even those who you have no prior engagement with. Why are you being nice to Denvish all of a sudden?

I'll tell you this, if you trace ANYTHING back to it's original purpose, it always for "attention." You do everything in life for attention.

You buy a nice car for attention.
You buy a nice house for attention.
You buy new computers for attention.
You comb your hair in the morning for attention.
You post on the BBS for attention.

Why are so interested in negative attention? Do you like it better than positive attention? I really don't understand you at all.

Yeah, and I wish you'd take the time to read the one of the two e-mails I sent you 7 hours prior to you posting this, in one of which I wrote:

Having read through the comments on your site, I'd like to point out the flaws in this statement:

"He also stated that the use of the software would cause unnecessary usage of NG servers and database (personally I disagree;
the kind of people who would use this program are the kind that have Firefox's ReloadEvery set to 60 seconds or less on the Portal page);"

The people nestled in the Portal page running FireFox's refresh would have no detrimental effect on the database AT ALL, because the Portal page is completely static, and does not rely on a connection to the database. The Portal lists are generated as new entries come in, rather than on the fly. Thus, these people you describe running this FireFox refresh utitilty cause no negative effect on the database whatsoever, whereas your application in its current carnate requires a check on the database to see if the entry exists.

"I don't think he'd actually read the thread before he deleted it, because he's under the impression that there was
no minimum to the refresh time."

I had read through the thread - from my last e-mail: "you do mention that the default is one minute, but don't offer any further clarification as to time restrictions than that". A default can be changed. You didn't write that it couldn't be set to a lower value than 60 seconds.

The post on your site also reflects only the negative comments about your program. I thought you might have good enough grace to grant me at least 24 hours before:

a) Making me look like the Wicked Witch of the West on your site.
b) Posting a link to those comments from the BBS to the negative-only comments on your site, which leads to
c) People forming opinions based on one sided, information-deficient comments (like deck_head_tottie, RedCircle and Slightly_Crazy_Dude here).

I never said this was a bad idea, period. I just asked you to cease distributing the application as-was. In the initial e-mail I sent you, I wrote:

we may eventually provide all of those details, including the details your program requires to function correctly.

In the e-mail following the first (which I sent just 20 minutes or so after you had posted here (before I'd seen your initial reaction here)), I gave an example of how things might work more efficiently.

This really is the best example of how to go about things arse about tit - we're not inapproachable, we're at the end of an e-mail address. If I had known you were planning on writing such a script, you could have asked for advice on the best way to go about it and I've gladly helped you out along the way. Instead, you have me looking like some fascist bastard and a heap of users confused as to why you pulled the application in its current form. Good job.

Well, this right here is what I was talking about. What could be done regarding the program that would not affect the database?

a) Making me look like the Wicked Witch of the West on your site.

It's YOUR site Jim. We don't feel negatively about you at all.

b) Posting a link to those comments from the BBS to the negative-only comments on your site.

The one part that should have stuck out was:

"I guess I should have checked with James before I released the program"

He should have, and since he didn't, then you had every right to delete the thread.

c) People forming opinions based on one sided, information-deficient comments (like deck_head_tottie, RedCircle and Slightly_Crazy_Dude here).

Well, I don't think anyone thought negatively about you and your decision. At best, we were all thinking of ways that everyone could get what they wanted. (At least I was)

we may eventually provide all of those details, including the details your program requires to function correctly.

That's really good to hear.

Instead, you have me looking like some fascist bastard and a heap of users confused as to why you pulled the application in its current form.

Again, not true. He should have contacted you, along with most people who make programs to aid users.

I'm sure, with your input, this matter will be resolved quickly, and some solution will be the product. I wish, though, that I could help, but damn if I know anything about html, database resources, VB, or bandwidth, so I'm pretty much useless. ;_;

Thanks, It depends on how much free time I have, there are times I don't even get B/p's in weeks because of how busy I am, but according to SK's lifetime list, my daily average is 23bps per day...

Because i might set my daily pts to 20 and hope i rank up! Thanks!

That's a pretty good pace, you should have your next rank in no time!

True, but I thought that they couldn't have used time travel because if they did since they first missed it, then they would of had no reason to travel back in time if they got cookies, although only one got a cookie, which means that they still had a reason to go back, which means I hate time travel as they got to screw up the future by changing something AND one of them got a cookie, which should have been mine.

If I had recieved them, the chances are that comments both in previous posts, and on the download page, would have been different.

OK, I'd assumed that the Portal made the same demands on the database as the PID+1 page did, so I was wrong in making that statement, and hereby officially apologise

Well here I have to disagree. There were several posts in the thread asking if the minimum could be dropped from 60 to 30 seconds (to make it easier to catch quickly flagged entries).

I thought you might have good enough grace to grant me at least 24 hours before:

a) Making me look like the Wicked Witch of the West on your site.

That was never my intention. Why the hell would I want to do that? It would be pointless. That was the main reason I sent you a reply asking if it would be OK to paste the whole email text on the site (I didn't feel it would be fair without your permission). Anyway, I apologise for unintentionally misrepresenting you

b) Posting a link to those comments from the BBS to the negative-only comments on your site, which leads to

Yeah well, if I'd recieved those 2 emails, that probably wouldn't have happened, or the comments on the site would have been different

c) People forming opinions based on one sided, information-deficient comments (like deck_head_tottie, RedCircle and Slightly_Crazy_Dude here).

I think you misjudge the Wi/Ht members. Everyone here (well, maybe not this dave_mac_dave geezer, who I've not seen before) has the utmost respect for yourself, and I really doubt that any of them see you in any way as a bad person because of this.

I never said this was a bad idea, period.

Sorry, I got the wrong end of the stick from the original email. I won't deny that I was probably being over-defensive of my work.

I just asked you to cease distributing the application as-was.

Which was done as soon as I read the email

In the e-mail following the first (which I sent just 20 minutes or so after you had posted here (before I'd seen your initial reaction here)), I gave an example of how things might work more efficiently.

I wish I had recieved it, but there's still no sign of it. Maybe you could cc denvish[NOSPAM]@gmail.com on future communications (I'll use that account for sending, too). These problems with my email are really pissing me off, it's not the first time that messages have gone missing, and I have no idea why it's happening. All the fucking spam gets through OK.

Anyway, the project is discontinued for the moment. Maybe I'll get in touch about alternative (non-resource-sapping) ways of doing it at some point (eg using the Portal HTML, rather than PID+1?). I never intended to cause hassle for anyone, least of all you, so I'm very sorry for any trouble caused/slurs on your character. If you could forward your previous emails to the above gmail address, I'd appreciate it, since I value your input.

And now, the toilet beckons (again)

"Anyway, it's hard to tell without the reading the entire e-mail."

Precisely. Although I find that comment a little difficult to swallow, given that you wrote:

Sounds like you already made your mind up (yes, I know your comments about reading the whole e-mail came AFTER this sentence, as I KNEW your comments about reading the whole e-mail came after this the first time around, before I replied).

What's harsher? Me saying that you guys can only make confused comments, based on what evidence you have (which isn't a character assassination on your part), or you claiming that "I didn't quite take into consideration all the factors of what the B/P helper did exactly ."

Pssh, you probably won't even read this.

-wismty for hitting 5,000 saves.
-Bonus for the oh so hard to find 13,000 blams.
-Carmel for hinting at and actually getting Lt. Col.
-jen for hitting Captain and getting a very nice vp bonus.
-SCD for hitting 800 right on the dot.

There is no reason for this sentence you are reading right now to be included in this post.
