The Wi/Ht? Forum, and this thread in particular, is open to anyone. It's just home to those of us who typically spend more of our spare time trying to understand something than posting mindless drivel ... there are always exceptions (who shall remain nameless) ...
Anyway, the Wi/Ht? Club now has ~20 members and is a bit harder to get into. Being helpful and spending lots of time (not like 24 hours a day, more like having spent time here over 6 months) in the Forum are the kind of things that get you noticed to the members. If you're noticed, you might get nominated by a member. If you're nominated, you might get voted in. Simple?

As long as you don't mind waiting, and post good things here often, you will probably become a member.
But when I say "don't mind waiting" I mean it.
I have been posting here for about seven months, along with a few other people, and we are not yet members.
They add one knew member every few months are so.
Post here to enjoy yourself, not just to become a member.

What kind of error message is that?
P.S. I just like to use screenshots! That way people have more proof that it's real!

Haha, if that were me, I'd be taking a hint. Whether that hint was intentionally implied or not is a different matter...
I was accepted in in a little over a month (I lost my accurate count when I changed my profile message and deleted the back up. Oops). This place was even less populated than it is now, so I had no compeition. If I did, I don't remember them.
Now that I think about it, seven months is harsh. You sure are dedicated Baron.

There have been a lot of users complaining about not being able to use the text search feature of the BBS, so liljim has personalised the error message a bit more in order to stop most of them. Would you rather a "Error: text search is disabled. Please go back and try again" message?

Actually no you didn't, I tried to correct it, but I had already 4 posts so I had to wait "approximately 23 minutes" the messege I wanted to post was "Darn! Remember*, there I think I got it!"

The User Profile feature and text based BBS searches were both disabled due to the drain they made on the DB resources. Think about it ... you can type in 3 characters and have the BBS text search spit out every entry with that combination in them. Even if it's an entire quote you are tyring to find, it still has to read through all of the posts to find it. Although less exstensive, the User Profile feature was in a similar boat, having to read 300k+ user names (at the time it was disabled) to generate your answers.
All of the hardware and software upgrades they have done, and will be doing, have made it possible that these functions may return. There's a big hardware upgrade due in September and James is gearing up to prep for that rather than trying to implement any new features. Sometime late fall/early winter is likely the best "hope" for either (both?) to return.

At 8/20/04 10:36 PM, D0GMA wrote: due to the drain they made on the DB resources.May i inquire as to what a DB resource is?
The quick answer is to run a highly intensive graphics program on your PC. Minimize it. Run a search for all *.txt files on your system. Both processes suffer as your computer tries to do both. Eventually it accomplishes both tasks, but it does them poorly.
Warning: gross overgeneralizations in progress Danger Will Robinson Danger
All systems are finite and semi-autonomous. Most virii work by overloading all available resources. As the normal allocation of resources is chewed up, more processing is "borrowed" from other systems until there's nothing left that it is allowed to borrow ... then you get your crash. The searches were a non-virus form of that.
There's a limited number of gateways into, and out of, any system, which are historically the biggest problem with interacting with any system. Every time you communicate, your coding of what to do (be it an e-mail, uploading an image, whatever) is chopped up into little bits. Each of those then select the route that, at the millisecond they are looking, is the fastest way to get where it's going. Once there, all the little bits use the code that was added to them to figure out how they are supposed to fit back together. Then they line up at the gateways with everyone else's actions to get into the server to get what you want done.
Once they get IN, the server chops them up again as needed, and processes the action(s). The response (usually just the next page loading) then has to stand in line at another gateway trying to get out and then goes through the same process trying to get back to you.
NG had the problem that everything went through the same gateways. You'd have to try and vote (10-30 seconds each) 2-8 times to get a vote queued up "just so" to get it processed. DB searches used those same gates and the same servers as the rest of NG. If the answer (or vote) glitched, and you went to repeat it, you just added to the problem by drawing on more processing. Since the total number of actions that can be processed is limited, when you shift resources to one, they are not able to be used by something else.
The obvious, and most vital, concern for NG was to make the Portal run smoothly. The easy answer was to sacrifice features that use a lot of resources, but aren't inherently vital to its operation. Since the BBS searches are now limited to searching for topic names and authors, it only has to read through ~120k topic names or ~560k user names it is done much more quickly than searching through ~2.3M posts looking for a word. Since it's done more quickly, that processing is then freed up for the next action that much sooner, etc.
Ugh i barely find the need to use the search *pfeh*
The bonus to the old search was that, by my quoting you above, any search for that word would spit both of our replies out. Most typically it was used by people trying to find out in what threads their name had come up. It's how Bevin found the BP list lol I mentioned that she had ranked up to Captain and a day later she had found the thread.
At 8/20/04 11:38 PM, BonusStage wrote: but wouldn't it only slow down YOUR own computer if its you searching for something in the text search.
It slows down your computer while it locks up waiting for an answer. The thing you are forgetting is the other computers that are doing the search for your computer. You are only stalled while you wait for those computers to tell you the answer. While the servers slow down trying to find results for you, everything else they are supposed to be doing (showing flash to someone, loading a BBS page, etc.) also slows and everything they are doing slows you down even further in return.
Even if your computer had direct access to the DB, the only way you could search through it without affecting anyone would be to download it in its entirety and search through those file ON your computer ... which neglects the fact that simply downloading that volume of information would slow everything down while it tried to give it all to you.
Firstly Bevin isssss???
Bevin is the name of a user who found the BP thread by typing Bevin into a BBS text search. She's since gone essentially inactive.
Secondly i get that much, so that means that some people used to use the text just to see if their names had come up recently?
I don't know that that's the case, but I started thinking of it that way when she mentioned that was how she found the BP thread.
In case anyone is curious about the recent election results I've e-mailed both spancker and the winner to find out what's taking so bloody long. I received an e-mail from the winner today and he said he'd post in here as soon as his internet problems were solved. spancker hasn't replied yet (he's probably still reading the e-mail I sent him haha). I also jumped ahead of Crono- a few minutes ago to take over the number 4 spot on the top 50 list. Looking at the point gap I have to cover if I want a shot at catching ramagi or gfox makes me sick to my stomach.
