Religion is merely the excuse used for people to act like... well people. They can take off the façade of "civilization" but need some kind of justification to give to people they are trying to recruit/convert to their cause ... and to themselves until they become jaded enough to not care.

I never knew you were Irish D0GMA. What a pleasant surprise. I live in Northern Ireland, and I'm a Catholic. The Troubles that tore the Six Counties apart for over 30 years are, for the most part over.

The IRA will most likely disband in the next 10 years or less. They have reached a point where they know violence really is not the answer. There are still hardcore Republicans, the 'Real IRA' but they are disorganised and unco-ordinated, not to mention repulsed by almost everybody in Ireland in the wake of the Omagh bomb in 1998. Popularity with the Nationalist population is what kept the IRA going throughout the last 30 years, and the Reak IRA lack that.

The primary objective of the IRA: A united Ireland of 32 counties under one government, is becoming a reality. Sinn Fein will most likely be in power in the South in 10 years, as Fine Gael and Fianna Fail lose votes every year, while Sinn Fein are gaining popularity with the South's young voters. From there, they'll be dealing with the British government directly, and a United Ireland will eventually be achieved.

I could go on and on, but if you'd like to discuss Northern Ireland again, I'd be glad to.

By the way SCD, in regards to marches, FUCK all marches. It all started with the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The battle was won by William of Orange, (who D0GMA mentioned earlier). It was a victory for Protestants over Catholics.

Modern day Orangemen want to honour that battle by marching along the route the real warriors took. This route passes straight through Nationalist areas. The Orange Order has been, for hundreds of years, a tool of provokation and intimidation . It has been justly labelled the Klu Klux Klan of Northern Ireland. Both groups are rife with hatred and bigotry.

Anyway, that's my view on that. (I am not a die-hard Republican, but it angers me that Protestants insist on marching through Nationalist areas, knowing that they are provoking and agitating the local residents of the areas they march through.)

Personally, I have exactly zero issue with marches. What is an Orange march after all? It's just a parade of people celebrating their Protestant heritage. What happens on St. P's? There's a parade, which is just a bunch of marching people wearing green celebrating their Irish (sometimes imaginary) heritage.

My stance on the Orange Lodges' choice of routes is a bit more complex.
The understandable desire to follow a historic path needs to be counterbalanced against the history of taking that path. The old marches used to end in Catholic districts so that Orangemen could hand out some beatings and rapes. That they now merely go through is an improvement, but people do so enjoy holding grudges ...

A stat is a stat MPA. Some people think it's cool to get banned so they put it in their sig. It's kinda the same with other stats. People want the attention. Ranked whatever in experience, blam/protects, reviews, voting power, posts, etc. If I stepped on any toes posting this it was purely intentional (heh).

I am now ranked number 49 in Blams and Saves! I am now one spot in front of BigManBrainy! I never thought I would beat him in B/S, but I did!

Also, the "thing" in my profile is a character from my favorite comic book, "The Maxx". It is actually a very deep comic, as well as a satire of super heros. I am not big on Comic Books, but I do so like that "The Maxx" as well as the very few other comics made by Sam Keith.
