Yay... I'm level 7...

I'm looking at all the other high leveled / otherwise accomplished people here :/

Than again, I somehow have >40 fans already, thanks for that! :D

aye, some discussion!

how did y'all fare on pico day yesterday? have a grand time? submit a piece for the special day? i myself enjoyed the stream in the chat room; the folks behind the camera put on a good show. some ng gems were brought up, plenty of other animations and some rather interesting pieces were up on the stream as well. all in all, it was an entertaining stream and the hosts did well on that.

any of you actually go to the party? do share if ya did! i would have loved to gone to the pico day party; maybe some other time in the future :P

This thread needs MORE listmakers! I remember the times when we had 5 or 6 different listmakers and our discussions would take up 2 or even 3 posts, haha.

Not done this in a while:

Listening to:

Accept - Restless and Wild. I've actually been listening to a lot of non-metal stuff lately, particularly from what I got by copying all of my dad's music onto my laptop. Some good stuff, others bad but for now, back to some metal!

For only being around for four months, that's not bad at all. It took me 9 1/2 years to reach 200 fans. :P

To be honest, the thought of Pico Day completely flew over my head this year. Spending more time outside the house means less time to think of NG. I didn't even realise Pico Day was near until a few days prior to it. Considering I won a tank trophy for User of the Year in 2011 on that Pico Day, it's appalling of me to be this way.

Contrary to what I said above, I still wish I went to the Pico Day parties. It's a damn shame I'm never able to go to them with it being over in America and all. That and I'm unemployed so I have no safe income to spend my money on getting over there. It's a shame it's like this because if I don't go to the Pico Day parties then the odds of ever meeting the Fulps are slim. I can always hope either of them (or even both) make a trip to the UK sometime but I can't hold my breath on it.

This happened with all the listmakers years back anyway. Also, thanks. :D

On a completely different note, I'm curious to know both of your opinions on 16-bit video game consoles. Do you guys prefer the Neo Geo, TurboGrafx-16, Super Nintendo, or the Sega Genesis?

I have to say the Mega Drive but only because it was my first console and I never owned a Super Nintendo. The SNES is undoubtedly a technically superior console but any of the games I've played that were originally on it I've played on other consoles. There are times that I wish I had picked up a pre-Gamecube Nintendo console but apart from one year with the Mega Drive, it was Playstation all the way. However, there came one year where I got a Gamecube for Christmas and while my parents said if I wanted an Xbox instead they could swap it but I was more than happy with the Gamecube considering certain games.

However, my dream is to own a NeoGeo one day. The only thing is: AES is heavily overpriced and I don't have any room for a MVS.

i have not had experience with the neo geo or turbografx-16, though between the SNES and genesis i would choose SNES. i had a blast with my genesis, mostly sonic the hedgehog 2 (though i could never get past that darned chemical plant zone lol).

i had a fair library for the SNES, and a friend and i still pop it out every so often for a round of Super Mario World or Killer Instinct. i've had no luck in recovering my Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers, and less luck finding it. oh well heh.

Got a bit of time before going out for some karaoke (which is my usual for Thursdays starting from the start of this year) so replies time! Tonight's karaoke will be songs from The Beatles, Queen, David Bowie, Talking Heads and The Doors.

Listening to:

David Bowie - Station to Station. See, there's my non-metal listenings but I have put more out of place stuff on my playlist lately. Some I've come to like. I find myself digging Blondie's music now.

I can't argue with it being one of the most popular consoles of all time. All you need to do is look at the list of games they had and then realise how fucking impressive it was.

I always like a bit of chiptune/8-bit music but could do with more of it on my laptop. Best I can do for now is grab NES soundtracks. Over the last month or two I have been on a downloading spree for video game soundtracks but now I feel I'm just at the bottom of the barrel for downloading soundtracks of games that I'm familiar with.

Usually when I list what I'm listening to, it's generally music albums since 99% of the time I'm listening to whole albums. Well, for when I'm on the laptop anyway. It's kinda the opposite for when I'm listening to music on my iPod.

As for giving the song a listen, I'm happy to hear that both you and SmashLuigiFan1. I wasn't sure what you two enjoy from music generally but it's good to introduce people to stuff I'm familiar with and even vice-versa. I'm understanding that metal isn't for everyone but if one who isn't so big on it wants to try out something once in a while, I can always lend them in on a few records here and there.

They still do tank awards but bringing them out hasn't been all that reliable for the last few years. I'm not even sure if we were meant to have tank awards at Pico Day last weekend. 2012's tank awards were postponed so long that it went over into mid 2013. The last tank awards that were hosted on Pico Day or early on in the year was in 2011 when I won it. I've still got that tank trophy and it's not going anywhere.

Incase you wonder what was the cause for me to win user of the year, it was due to my extreme contributions to icon and genre modding at the time. I ended up making over 16,000 icons for Newgrounds to convert everything that had 46x46 icons at the time to 140x90 for the 2012 redesign. Admittedly, I wasn't as sociable in the outside world back then than I am now but it at least helped pass the time until I found new places to go to regularly.

a Pico Day party across the pond would be neat, or even a second party simultaneously held over there while the american party goes. dunno how it would work with time zones and all, but it's a thought.

We'd just party at later times... Sounds awesome!!

i had a fair library for the SNES, and a friend and i still pop it out every so often for a round of Super Mario World or Killer Instinct. i've had no luck in recovering my Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers, and less luck finding it. oh well heh.

I do have a Street Fighter II game but only on the Mega Drive and I gotta say, Mega Drive controls for fighting games isn't all that great. Well, unless you had the six button controller as opposed to the normal one but I was never sure how that worked out.

I was more than happy with the Gamecube considering certain games.
which certain games were those?

Super Smash Bros. Melee was one. I also caught a few glimpses of Metroid Prime and wanted to play that. Neither game I got alongside the Gamecube and I got the Donkey Konga game. Even though I got the Gamecube, there were still a fair amount of games that I haven't played on it and I feel ashamed that it's that way. Then again, I can say the same thing about pretty much every big console ever.

as i think of gamecube games i remember having a blast with the Resident Evil 1 gamecube remake! beautifully redone. Resident Evil 4 was fantastic as well

Right on! My sister borrowed REmake off a friend of hers at the time and we both played it. I can't remember how far she got but I enjoyed it enough to pick up the game for myself. This is where my interest in Resident Evil began. It wasn't too long after that I got RE4 and that's become one of my favourite games of all time. Then it was a matter of playing 0, 2 and 3 all on the Gamecube (I know, ports for 2 and 3). I missed out on Code Veronica sadly and while I have it on the PS3, I haven't even gotten in that far.

while i'm on the thought. Super Smash Bros Melee was great, and i simply cannot wait for the next coming up on the WiiU and 3DS. Mario Kart Double Dash was another great game in my opinion, but then i liked every Mario Kart installment haha.

Admittedly, I felt I was put off from Super Smash Bros. but I think I can have enough fun with the 3DS variant. I still need a Wii U but I'm all for having more games on the 3DS. Plus, I know somewhere to go for StreetPass events.

Not going to lie, but that song was surprisingly really good.

It's easily one of my favourites from them. Their most popular songs are Fast as a Shark and Balls to the Wall. Also kickass tunes.

I have to say the Mega Drive but only because it was my first console and I never owned a Super Nintendo. The SNES is undoubtedly a technically superior console but any of the games I've played that were originally on it I've played on other consoles. I don't know about the SNES being "undoubtedly a technically superior console."

In some senses I believe it is, particularly the sound card. Maybe they're on par with the graphics card but the SNES did have time to develop a bit further than the Mega Drive due to being out four years later. Still, both consoles are indeed awesome in their own rights.

The Genesis and SNES are pretty much equals in my mind, even though I personally prefer the Genesis as it too was my first console.

While we're on the subject of the Mega Drive, I did had to pick up Ecco the Dolphin from the eShop. I know I have it a few times already but I really wanted it on handheld. Now if only I could get Super Metroid on handheld, then I'd be sorted. :P

The GameCube was a really great console, debatably Nintendo's best one. It's a shame it sold horribly, considering how so many great games were released for it, like Metroid Prime, Yu-Gi-Oh! The Falsebound Kingdom, Animal Crossing, Eternal Darkness, F-Zero GX, Viewiful Joe, Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door, the list goes on!

From that list I had only played Metroid Prime but man, I fucking loved that and Prime 2 so much. Oddly enough, I never got into 3 despite owning it since I got the Wii for Christmas 2007. I really want to give it another shot but maybe the transition from Gamecube controls to Wii controls kinda threw me off.

Also, seeing that you mentioned F-Zero GX, that's one game I wish I got but from that franchise, I've only played X and GP Legend. F-Zero X is easily one of my favourite racing games since nothing beats games where you play really fast vehicles. I feel most racing games you don't travel as fast as the speed checker is telling you but it's different for F-Zero X.

Hah, a double post! Not done that in a while.

Bought Floyd's "The Wall", Purple's "Fireball" and "Burn", Hendrix's "Are You Experienced" and "The Cry of Love". Ok, you can argue that all those have helped to develope metal in some way or another. But here's the non-metal purchase for today: Kraftwerk's "Autobahn". :D

oh man! paper mario the thousand year door! i'm just gonna be gushing here, but i absolutely love TTYD! that and the first Paper Mario on the N64! Super Paper Mario was alright, currently playing through Sticker Star on my 3DS and i'm enjoying the new take so far, but the first and second i simply cannot get enough of!

the storyline, the characters, the music, everything in between: i fell in love with it all!

Yeah, I've never played a Neo Geo or Turbo-Grafx-16 myself, though I'd like to one day. And what games have you played on the Genesis other than Sonic 2? I could give you some great recommendations if you'd like, as I'm pretty familiar with a lot of the Genesis' library.

i did also play Battletoads and Streets of Rage far as i can recall, and those were fun. prolly some other games as well but i'm blanking out there. thanks for the offer, but i'll have no recommendations. throw some out if you will, though i will more than likely not act on it. i'm content with what i have as far as my sega genesis library goes lol

I've actually never played Killer Instinct or looked into that much. That's probably something I should fix, as all I know about the franchise is the whole "ultra/combo breaker" phrase.

C-C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER! lol

if you can find the first KI for the SNES, it's worth a look. or even the second, Killer Instinct Gold, on the Nintendo 64 which i also liked. there is the reboot out there, though it bums me that it is solely on the Xbox One. had it been released on the PS4 as well, i would have been better with that. i digress; if you have an Xbox One or plan on getting it, you could check it out there.

SNES had it going on, and even today it still does.

I always like a bit of chiptune/8-bit music but could do with more of it on my laptop. Best I can do for now is grab NES soundtracks. Over the last month or two I have been on a downloading spree for video game soundtracks but now I feel I'm just at the bottom of the barrel for downloading soundtracks of games that I'm familiar with.

i do the same as well; i can never go wrong with a Megaman soundtrack from the NES.

Super Paper Mario was decent, though i more preferred the turn-based rpg that Paper Mario was before. i enjoyed the game nonetheless, and the action rpg direction went for a fluid game. loved the antagonists! i more liked the villain Dementio above all others. i can't forget the fearsome Mr. L haha. i also had a soft spot for Nastasia.

of all things though, i loved Count Bleck's character development. from who seemed like a cold, heartless monster who wanted only the destruction of all things to the story gradually revealing he was a tortured man; not only a tragic villain but he was a tragic hero who acted out of the purest emotion; the emotion that is love.

Anyway, I'm currently playing through Thousand Year Door. I'm about to start chapter 3

ahhh, the Glitz Pit. now that was a fun arena to battle it out in. good chapter. and if you haven't met him yet, prepare to face the reigning champion, the one! the only! RAWK HAWK!

"One of us is walking out of here with the belt, and the other one's getting RAWKED!! HAR HAR HAR!"

teehee

and I already have 46 of the 100 star pieces (all currently available) and about 30 of the 80 badges I think. Great game so far, but the music is pretty unmemorable. They're still good songs, though.

they're memorable to me!
*cries*

haha i jest. i liked the soundtrack, though the best OST of the paper mario series would have to be the first. actually no, the second. no, the first! the second! i love both equally that i cannot simply choose between the two! ah!

Also, I hear Sticker Star is awful because it got rid of all the amusing dialogue and was another "bowser kidnaps princess" cookie cutter plot. And there's apparently no reason to fight enemies at all.

i would have to agree with you. i love the game, i do, but what you said is indeed true. the change in the combat system relying on stickers is a real kicker, and aye you do not have to face enemies except for earning some pocket change in coins or if they are absolutely in your way.

leveling up is nonexistent, as far as battle stats go. you can find +HP ups and get yourself stronger stickers, but otherwise not leveling up at all takes away from the RPGness.

Considering how the N64 has about 5 or so fighting games for it (two of which are the Fighter's Destiny games, which are very innovative), I should look into Killer Instinct Gold. It's not too expensive, is it?

shouldn't be, no. online or in some store selling older games, you can find it around the $20-$30 range. you could order it off amazon; i have found it reliable in my experience if you choose to use that.

He is and isn't. His hits are more than popular whereas the rest of his stuff is indeed underappreciated at times. I find that his whole range of music isn't quite as accessible as what others have had but it's good that his artistic works have still given him success.

Can't argue with the selection of stuff that you got. I could do with more Kraftwerk myself and I'm sure I did listen to Autobahn on Spotify at some point. I would like to pick up some CDs this month but I think I really should see about getting a new external hard drive. The one I have now is becoming a bit of a problem due to hard drive space just not being big enough for me anymore so I want to get something bigger that also doesn't have to use a power cable just to run it.

It always is. I find that I'm probably doing it too often now since it's a weekly thing and there's karaoke events at other places hosted by the same guys so sometimes I'll do karaoke twice in a row. I think this Thursday I may end up giving it a miss due to aunt's birthday. I could possibly work around it but missing it out once in a while won't hurt me. At least with that it'll feel fresher the following week.

I see what you did there with the last word. :P With me and music right now, I'm still trying to get through all of my dad's music and this is bound to take a long time. He's got hundreds of compilation albums and I'm gonna need to remove duplicates along the way.

I never try to guess what's going on their end so whenever they can get the latest tank awards out I'll just have to leave it to them. I just hope it won't be carried over into the following year like how it was for 2012 awards.

Incase you wonder what was the cause for me to win user of the year, it was due to my extreme contributions to icon and genre modding at the time.

It sure is. At the time that was roughly 10% of the whole portal covered by myself alone. I wish I had did more but it was one of those if you stop, it will take a while to get started again. I haven't done any icons in two years and I'm sure there's still loads of submissions left that are needing to be upgraded to the thumbnail format.

I do have a Street Fighter II game but only on the Mega Drive and I gotta say, Mega Drive controls for fighting games isn't all that great. Well, unless you had the six button controller as opposed to the normal one but I was never sure how that worked out.

I would have loved remakes of 2 and 3 as well. When picking them up on the Gamecube, I actually thought they were remakes but it turns out they were not. I'm still happy with getting them, though.

Thankfully the Wii U is starting to pick up with its games now. However, I really want them to make a new Metroid game. That out of everything will make me most positive with getting a Wii U.

where do you go for streetpass events? i streetpass some people occasionally, but are there certain spots to go to for that?

There's a place in Liverpool that do them. Even without that venue I tend to pick up enough to hit the max capacity, even when I'm in Birkenhead!

I sort of don't have a musical preference. I just listen to songs I enjoy regardless of genre, but it just so happens that about 95% of the songs I like are from/in video games.

It's good that you have that sort of preference. I try and keep myself open to all things but I really can't dig something like dubstep. We're all good on video games so no worries there. :3

I ended up making over 16,000 icons for Newgrounds to convert everything that had 46x46 icons at the time to 140x90 for the 2012 redesign.
Jeez, that sounds monotonous. How long did that even take?

That was ongoing work for 18 months with some gaps in between. I started my icon modding duties from when it had began to the launch of the 2012 redesign which was around then I had stopped. I did take a few months break in late 2010/early 2011 due to being in full time work but when it came to less hours and sadly unemployment not too long after, I gave myself time to make more icons again.

I do have a Street Fighter II game but only on the Mega Drive and I gotta say, Mega Drive controls for fighting games isn't all that great. Well, unless you had the six button controller as opposed to the normal one but I was never sure how that worked out.
The 6-button controller is really great for fighting games, as the two rows of three buttons are just perfect as well as the smooth d-pad. Seriously, the Genesis and Saturn have the absolute BEST d-pads of any video game console. It's kind of why the games on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection feel unplayable on the PS3, as that d-pad kind of sucks.

I've been trying to play Ecco on the 3DS and the controls for it feel weird when being used to the Mega Drive controls.

Isn't Donkey Konga that game that came with the Bongos peripheral? I've always wondered if that game controlled well.

Yeah, that was the one. From what I recalled the peripheral did work but I wasn't so big into the game. I probably still have that and the game somewhere in my house.

Right on! My sister borrowed REmake off a friend of hers at the time and we both played it. I can't remember how far she got but I enjoyed it enough to pick up the game for myself. I seriously need to play through the Resident Evil series. The only game I beat was Resident Evil 5 (got the platinum trophy, too), and I only got through a large part of Resident Evil 1: Directors Cut on Chris' story. I have Resident Evil 4 on my Wii, but I have no way of playing it as my Wii will just get clogged with the disc (again) because my Wii is a broken down mess.

RE5 is easily one of the weakest from the series. It's not bad but it had seen better days. Shame you're not able to play RE4 due to the faults with the Wii. When you find a way to play it, make it a high priority for your time you spend on entertainment purposes since it's one hell of a game.

I know the pain. I have TWO external hard drives and it's just a pain in the ass, when the USB cable tilts ever so slightly in the port, the hard drive disconnects. Also, one of my USB ports doesn't work properly anymore...
But I don't want to put in another internal hard drive, since I already have like three of them. >_>

I should just replace two of the smaller ones with a bigger one, I guess.
