For crappy wines I guess that might work best. Better to make it seem like it tastes good with anything instead of limiting itself to a few food categories. With better wines it might work best if they seem a bit more exclusive and especially fit for certain occasions. I mean, if you're looking for a good wine anyway, then you will probably care about what it goes well with (cause you want dinner to be perfect or whatever).

To be honest I don't really drink wine with dinner much. I usually drink it as social events or what not I guess it would be best to find one that just good overall with out breaking the bank. I might just check out a local American wine which might be cheaper than French or German wines.
