Newgrounds recently introduced Controller Mapping for Flash Games.

The mapping for each game is unique so it will be a big project to add mapping to as many games as possible. This club is a place where people can suggest mapping defaults for game that don't have them!

We're using the Xbox controller as the template:

iu_1402288_1.png

For example, here’s how I would explain the Alien Hominid mapping:

Left Stick - Arrow Keys - Move

D-Pad - Arrow Keys - Move

X Button - A Key - Shoot

A Button - S Key - Jump

I start with the controller input type, followed by the keyboard key, followed by a description of the action performed.

Preferences will vary but in general if a game has jumping and attacking, the A button is Jump and the X button is Attack.

If you're a Supporter and have been setting your own custom mapping, you can also post a screenshot of your mapping in this thread, rather than transcribe it to text.

Thanks in advance for any help with this initiative! We'll be bringing some mapping moderators onboard when the tools are ready, as well.

Decided to get a couple easy (if not perfect) maps out the way to start this thread off.

iu_1402293_14526566.png

The "Restart" and "Exit" commands only work whilst in-game - the menus still require mouse/touch input. This should be sufficient, though.

iu_1402294_14526566.png

This doesn't map the options for quitting, muting audio or changing quality, but this should also be sufficient.

Great threat, should prove to be an invaluable resource!

I meant to ask this in the previous thread but this seems like as good a place as any; does this feature support 2 controllers (for example, multiplayer games) at the same time?

Thank U Tom & da Crew B^)

Yes, it does - here's the mapping for Brawl Royale as an example:

Awesome, thanks a lot for confirming!

Went and did maps for both A Koopa's Revenge games.

iu_1402496_14526566.png

This was based off the mapping Lambtaco did for AKR2.

iu_1402497_14526566.png

Lambtaco had technically already mapped AKR2 for me, I just added labels for everything he had left unlabelled.

is there anything someone who doesn't have a controller can do to help with this thread?

like combing for games that use UP/W to jump and/or DOWN/S for action so people can map the function to a different controller button for consistency?

Personally, I've been combing for games which use only the arrow keys/WASD for controls - in cases like that, I can just map everything to the D-pad and call it a day. I've also been

With that out the way, I've got a map to submit for Treadmillasaurus Rex:

iu_1402774_14526566.png

The game also has controls for adjusting quality (mapped to Q) and muting the audio (mapped to M), but this should be sufficient.

New map for Stagediver World Tour:

(This is probably the first four-player Flash game I've come across here, too, but that's besides the point)

Put out a mapping for Balloon Duel. Considering how strange this game's default controls are, this one felt more necessary than others.

iu_1403629_14526566.png

Gameplay-wise, these controls should feel familiar to anyone who's played Balloon Fight.

Went and knocked out another couple of controller mappings - this one's for Stealth Assassin:

iu_1403632_14526566.png

This one's for Ultimate Assassin 2:

iu_1403633_14526566.png

The controls remain the same across the games, so once Ultimate Assassin 3 and its Level Pack can be confirmed working in Ruffle, mapping them will be trivial.

You should be able to come up with mapping instructions without actually using a controller, just based on knowledge of the games controls and what would work best as controller inputs.

thanks! that's what i wanted to know. I'll be sure to post suggestions if/when i come across the kinds of games i mentioned in my previous reply (i remember seeing some, but not which ones).

Anyways, made a quick map for the original Amberial:

iu_1403694_14526566.png

Movement is identical in every other game IIRC, so this should be a good starting point for mapping them.

he/they - pretty cool guy - yt channel here - Flash Controller Mapping Crew

Super Mafia land

left and right pad and left-stick movement: move

right button: run and pick up

down button: jump

down pad and left-stick movement: power jump and duck

edit: it doesn't work on Ruffle yet, but add it just in case it does in the future as well as the other dangerous dungeons games and similar games of that nature.

Both games were confirmed working in Ruffle, so I've mapped both.

Saw the controller mapping for Alien Hominid Xtreme, decided to make an alternate one:

iu_1405659_14526566.png

The main difference from the original mapping I've made is that shooting is mapped to both bumpers, which should make mashing much easier and the "Improved Trigger" upgrade much easier to make use of.

I've also mapped grenades and oil slicks onto two different locations - I've mapped them on both triggers so they can be easily accessed on a regular controller, and mapped them to the face buttons in case the triggers are unavailable. (Shield has been mapped on the face buttons as well, as you can see here.)

(The Pause key was also unmapped, so I've mapped that to Start.)

Went and mapped a few of @53xy83457's games, since I had time to kill. Two of these do give away secrets, which I'll fully admit.

Gonna pick out a few games which currently can't be mapped. First is the Classroom trilogy:

Whilst movement can be easily mapped to the D-pad, cheating/advancing through text requires clicking the left mouse button. Thing is, all three games didn't need to do this - using the spacebar would've worked just as well as clicking the mouse, and doing so wouldn't have affected gameplay. (Going from memory, there were some niche situations in The Classroom 2 where space was used for a specific action, but I can't remember the exact details).

In a similar vein is Perfect Puff:

Right now, smoking spliffs is done exclusively through clicking the mouse - like the Classroom trilogy, it wouldn't affect gameplay to enable smoking to be done with the spacebar.

Precisely how to deal with these situations, I'm not sure. Updating games like these to add keyboard controls would be sufficient to enable mapping.

Moving on, I decided to map a game out before bed:

iu_1407522_14526566.png

"Restart Level" is mapped far away from "Push Block" to minimise the risk of accidentally pushing it and wiping your progress.

Keeping on Coolio-Niato's work, I've mapped the full Spin quadrilogy:

iu_1407838_14526566.png

iu_1407839_14526566.png

iu_1407840_14526566.png

iu_1407841_14526566.png

Whilst you're at it, I think putting these into a dedicated "Spin" series playlist would be a good idea.

I've also gone through Coolio's other quadrilogy, Music MiniGamez, and mapped Music Stomp and Music Smash:

iu_1407906_14526566.png

iu_1407908_14526566.png

The other two games, Music Zap and Music Ping, exclusively use the mouse, so mapping them is out of the question. Both should work perfectly on mobile, though.

All four games can also be put into their own dedicated series, I feel.

I've also mapped Stay Awake - this one was pretty straightforward, since it only used the left and right arrow keys:

Knocked out a mapping for a random advergame I stumbled across:

iu_1408776_14526566.png

This can likely go into the "Puzzles - Sliding" genre as well.

he/they - pretty cool guy - yt channel here - Flash Controller Mapping Crew

Went and made a map for - colordefense -:

iu_1408862_14526566.png

Its counterpart/prequel, - colorwars -, uses the mouse for movement, making it unmappable at this time.

Both games could be bundled into their own series - Niato called colordefense "The second in the - color - series" - but this seems unnecessary IMO.

Weirdo information blurb! Many mouse menus in Flash games can be engaged via keyboard by pressing the Tab key. At least in Ruffle. So by that logic, if we bind the Tab key to a button (say, Select, that's an often unused key and literally SELECTS something), and then follow it up with the arrow keys to move a highlight cursor. I'll be binding controls when this is appropriate, and I encourage you to see if using Tab/arrow keys and Enter/Space navigates menus as well, and if it does, binding it!
