Is it allowed to post Flash projectors (exe) instead of Web SWFs?

My games are usually pretty heavy and complicated for Web. (Multiple external resource usage and 200-300Mb size)

However it should work quite okay if packed in single exe file.

For this even we want to avoid asking people to run .exe files, so to be considered for prizes it should be something that can run on the web.

can you look into optimizing your game

300MB is really big, its 60 times the size of any upload from 2003.

It's because I'm doing much more complicated stuff than I did in 2003. Most animations and backgrounds are 32 bit bitmaps, lot of FLV videos for cutscenes, hi-quality sound and stuff...

I want things to look good, you know = )

Response to Flash Forward 2025! 2025-02-20 02:30:13

Without getting into semantics on the merit of quality vs file size, flash has had a lot of clever compression tools over the years, and an mp3 at 128kps is largely going to sound the same as an mp3 at 160kps. Too bad we cant all encode them to 320kps but hey, you do you.

Actually you can use 320kbps MP3, although I recommend to stick with 256, because Flash is quite glitchy with 320, you will hear lot of noticeable artifacts. To use it, you need to encode the file with external audio compressor and select "use imported MP3 quality" in the library after importing. Or just load the file externally. Flash will play it (does it have the choice? )

For music, if quality is needed I'm using the ADPCM compressor. It's heavier. But better.

okay, one more question.

Is it allowed to upload a few SWF files of a one game, loading each other through loadClip or something?

I'm using separate resource loading a lot.

At the moment we aren't set up well to accommodate that, as CORS policies will prevent loading files that are off-site and we don't have a great setup for multi-file SWF projects. Is your project available anywhere that I can view what you've got currently?

It's in too early stage of development right now. Can't show anything reasonable just yet. I need at least couple of weeks until it'll be in proper shape.

I'm asking it, because I usually design Flash projects to work in multi-file environment - different graphics in separate files, levels as separate files, etc. It really helps free the RAM and reduces crashes a LOT. Especially when dealing with image sequences.

I can upload it to my site when ready. But I don't really know how to run it in Ruffle from there. I guess I need to use Ruffle player as js file on the site.

Flash Forward Jam 2025

Time for our fifth annual Flash Forward Jam! This event celebrates the legacy of Flash while giving people cool new Flash games and interactive movies. It’s an alternate reality where Flash never died!

Entries are expected to run in the browser, thanks to Ruffle. Ruffle will run just about any AS2 game and many more AS3 games than last year, with better performance as well. Read the September Ruffle update for details on some of the changes since the last Flash Forward Jam.

Jam Requirements:

April 6th is the 25th anniversary of NG’s Flash Portal becoming the first place on the Internet where people could instantly publish movies and games. It would be awesome if you could publish your Flash Forward entry ON April 6th, to make the whole day a big event. This isn't a requirement, though.

Note, if you want your entry to run well on mobile, be sure your buttons have a large click space to capture finger taps.

Game Prizes:

1st - $1000
2nd - $610
3rd - $300
4th - $100

Movie with Interactive Element Prizes:

1st - $150
2nd - $90
3rd - $50

We’re crowdfunding prize money! Use the donation option on the Supporter page and PM me a heads up you donated towards the Flash jam.

Since the first Flash Forward, we updated the Project System to default to our HTML5 API (Newgrounds.io). Last year we provided instructions to access the old Flash API but this year @Psychogoldish has something else in the pipe - we’ll be introducing Flash components that utilize our modern API! Other Events

July 6th is NG’s 30th birthday and we’d love to see anything people want to make in celebration of this milestone.

@Whirlguy, @intrapath, @jamriot and @Mantis are organizing a 30th Anniversary Collab modelled after the 20th Anniversary Collab!

https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/666610

Whirlguy has kicked off the 30th Anniversary Audio Collab to create a bunch of themed music.

Mantis has kicked off the 30th Anniversary Art Collab, where the art will be used in a game.

There are other activities being organized, feel welcome to organize your own. Porter is organizing a standalone 30th Anniversary Wall Art Collab to create a site skin, for example!

Note Regarding the NG API for Medals and/or High Scores

Since the first Flash Forward, we updated the Project System to default to our HTML5 API (Newgrounds.io). Last year we provided instructions to access the old Flash API but this year @Psychogoldish has something else in the pipe - we’ll be introducing Flash components that utilize our modern API! Watch this space for updates.

Let's go! The Flash API is going modern!

You can publish early, it would just make April 6th a fun anniversary day if a lot of new Flash released that day.
