In terms of funny composer stories, this is another one I heard that features the instrument I play:
While conducting rehearsals for a church-sponsored orchestra, Bach accused the bassoonist of sounding like a nanny goat. That night, the bassoonist followed Bach and beat him up with a cane. Bach complained to the church, and they basically said “maybe don’t insult your performers next time”.
