the minimum for accepted icon pictures is a size of 1920 pixels wide, 1080 pixels tall, per single suggested picture
we require this size to move forward with any of your requests/ideas

we' will not be creating new genres for movies
please, focus on submissions that do not have an icon already assigned to the submission
the blank (tank picture) is an example of a submission without an icon that needs attention
the year 2000 is already completed for all movie icons, please, move on

a question for Tom ... or... whoever knows the answer to this
how are icons made for submissions that are uploaded to Newgrounds in 2023, is there some kind of computer that figures that out or how does that all work? I can't imagine that everyone that uploads something 100% of the time uploads their own icon, there has to be a computer of some kind

Most people who submit stuff in 2023 would already be using high quality thumbnails anyway, whether it's custom-made or a screenshot of their own, so no work on our part.
And no, there isn't any automatic thumbnail generation like YouTube has.

But it can't be 100% though
The best I can see is somewhere in the ballpark of 80% or something?
There can't be a set of people sitting around spinning in their chairs waiting for people to upload things and then find the roughly 80 submissions between the art portal and the movies and games portal that don't have an icon and they just go ahead and make one for them
there's GOT to be a computer doing that kind of work...
got to be...

Adding an icon to a movie/game is a requirement nowadays. And it's a concept most content creators or animators should be familiar with (It's been around on YouTube for many years).

Don't really have a milestone to announce yet, but I haven't posted here in a while either and wanted to say hi :p
I've updated 360 thumbnails in total from jan/feb 2005. Started off doing all videos, but that slowed the pace to a crawl, so I'm prioritizing featured content going forward.

Getting all the featured content covered sounds good!
I've been randomly updating thumbnails as I go, the latest was @Knight52's games! SpikeMan is now running via Ruffle, too.
@Explosm just needed this thumbnail done!
Also, this doesn't appear to play properly anymore, it always redirects to explosm. net once the flash loads in.
Some other movies of theirs in flash format seem to do this too.

Hmmm I'll file a Ruffle bug ticket for this!

I think it's related to the preloader trying to access explosm.net over http, which Chrome blocks for being mixed privacy settings (our page is https). Filed a ticket, ideally Ruffle can have an option to force http calls to https.
I'm going to have a higher file count than post count before this is done... I know it

Updated!
Just mentioning, this is the main reason that the most of 50% of my thumbnails are redrawing.

Not saying you can't take that approach, but unless you're already very good at drawing (or just trace), it may be difficult to capture the style of the original movie. Not saying you aren't bad, but I think you might've gotten lucky with NeroGeist.
I also drew my own thumbnails occasionally. Some examples

No doubt, im Very good at redrawing, about tracing, the results are good too, Also i use the original image colors.
Note: i made nerogeist thumbnails by computer and mobile(which explains some little difference of line Art)
More thumbnails done! this time i finally used "screengrab", the resolution?
the screengrab is ok, in quality-wise, but the resolution i don't know if is 900x1000 or "1920x1080(problably, not)"

and....about the "(2005) klay sports" movie, i used a filter that "optimizes" the blurred quality of the original image
also with full screen mode.
-anyway, both of these has a good quality

It was explained to me that we do a full screen, screen capture to generally maintain the soul of the creation/art/style that the original creator made when they originally submitted their content to newgrounds
Not a dunk on your abilities or anything buuuuuuuuuut... A trace or a drawing unless it absolutely needs to be done is even a little bit stepping away from the original creation
Though with some of the things I have seen in the early 2000's a trace or a re-draw would have given more life to the animation then the content provided. There are only so many ways you can screen cap a bouncing ball lol
