Quick question: Is there a limit on how old a submission has to be to be on the front page? (like does have to be submitted today or a few days ago to be on the front page?)

There isn't a limit, featured submissions are generally new but sometimes an overlooked entry will get featured much later. For example Mecha jerk 3066 was uploading during the FNF frenzy and flew under the radar until this week:
