This is a 2015 thread, but anyways. I think instead of suggesting ourselves what content should be put and not put on the front page, I think it needs to be automated. The UJ section is a great source, but after content is submitted on to the portal we'll need some other type of beneficial stat, that being voting help. With how many faves an animation gets, it get dumped up to the front page, however, old gems like Tarboy would not appear. Only recent hits that'll probably stay up for like 2 or 3 days, and after that, the next wave comes. FeaturedContent works like this, but it is outdated. Without getting into too much detail, the FeaturedContent section can also fit into the Portal under a different name, where the new highly faved animations automatically appear in like the top 20 or something slots. Name suggestion being "New Hits!" or something, idk

My gut reaction to this: I think enough of the internet is dictated by algorithms already. I like the human touch of a manually curated front page and the fact it’s not entirely a popularity (lowest common denominator) contest.
In addition most of what’s suggested here gets the FP so it’s rare for something deserving to get by, which would inevitably occur in an automated system.

I agree, Newgrounds actually does have real people checking what comes in and comes out, which is why it's also very good instead of a bot doing it. I was thinking of maybe one recent-highly-faved animation section to exist that works automatically. I don't think it would cause that much of an issue, but understandable I guess.

The audio portal has a similar feature, popular audio. One can select time frames and scores. Personally I'd prefer some more metrics, like most favorites, most reviews, etc.
An automated feature system entirely though reeks to me of the more impersonal, easily manipulated algorithms of places like YouTube, where quantity and popularity, not quality, dominates the chances of ever getting noticed in the endless feeds. I don't want to see that here, where most everyone already struggles to get 300 views a piece on audio if they aren't established. But perhaps tightening up automation with some new parameters and adding a new sidebar to the homepage would be nice, and touching up again on recommendations to get more relevant results based on tags and user favorites. Getting a front page as is is a high compliment from site staff and volunteers, which means a lot.

I really like the suggestions that you nice, not gonna lie! And yes, quality over quantity should remain on Newgrounds, a section of recent hits wouldn't break this all up.

Newgrounds is probably the only website hosting user-generated content on the Internet whose founder still personally curates front page content after more than 20 years.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that 99% of us wouldn't have it any other way. Tom is the real MVP.

What if you don't want to be frontpaged? What happens if you suddenly get enough faves to reach that quota? If the frontpage system was automated, once you get a lot of people favouriting it, it will be inevitable.

If I'm correct, you can opt out of any awards, which may include the frontpage privilege. I'm not sure about that though, and I know that if you submit A-rated content you are almost never considered for frontpage.

Opting out of awards does NOT prevent you getting frontpaged.
Case in point: Sr Pelo
Has not won an award since the release of COMEDY in July 17th 2020, yet still gets frontpaged. Note that he gets scores well over 4.8 stars, which should guarantee awards. For comparison, the 'Opt out of awards' feature was introduced around September of that year.
