The view you are seeing is the left character on a bending hill of a street as it curves down into the viewer. It is similar to this, only pushed further, almost like a zoomed telescopic shot: http://www.newgrounds.com/art/view/fxscreamer/diplomacy-has-failed

I'm still in final stages of refinement and may make a few adjustments. I've definitely been reading some perspective books regarding the horizon lines you've outlined, so I try to be aware of that. The street will keep curving behind the character on the left moving back and lower. The scene is basically an archway. It'll make a lot more sense once the background is done, which is why I'm sometimes reluctant to post early work. I understand the context is minimal with what I've shown.

I'm not sure what you're talking about regarding the face.

Line work, base color, and line color done with minimal effects. Shading and background work starts tomorrow. Still so much to do. :P

Getting very close. Finished the character shading and began the rough background sketching. Hopefully it's starting to make a lot more sense now. Observe the arching roadway as you can see the city lights far out below them. Again this is EXTREMELY rough...like 20 minute job rough. More adjustments with the perspective will be tweaked with the characters as I lock in the scene.

I'm a bit drunk posting this (and drawing it), but perhaps this is the start to another piece? I wanted to give Daphne another spin. We'll see what happens. This is super rough and scribbly right now. :P

Starting to go a little nuts on this piece....in a good way. I'm practicing some mad 2 point perspective. The scene is supposed to be a small town street during a rainy evening. Lots of grays, purples, cobblestone, brick, glowing street lamps...very moody. This is going to be a challenging piece. I've hazed out the characters so you can see through them for demo purposes.

WOOOOOO my shoulder hurts. I got 4 steps done tonight: Refined Line Art, Base Color, Line Color, and Texture.

I did some basic tests with depth of field and vignette and photo filtering, but shading hasn't even started yet, and there's a lot of detail work like plants, bushes, mountains, clouds, puddles, rain, fog, etc that have to eventually be implemented. This will look VASTLY different than what this shows once it's all done. There's still a lot to do. :P

nice job on the reflections, they look great! I think the bloom in the lights is fighting for attention too much. They're all kind of the same brightness, even the lights that I'm assuming are inside of that structure behind the window, I think they would be significantly dimmer because of that.

Interesting observation. Perhaps you're right. :D I'm trying to get better at composition focus which started as depth of field and color/contrast values. I actually boosted the exposure near the end of the piece because I wanted stronger contrast on the lights showing illumination. However, I may have become off balance with the piece by doing that. I'll keep an eye on it for the future. ;)

(enter song) "It's beginning to look a lot like.....domestic violence." LOL. Enzo has had enough of his brother making fun of him in his stupid costumes. This is the beginning sketchy part of the piece.

Just about ready for digital work. There will be more detail in the background that plays along with the characters.

I did this really fast last night when I was drunk (couple hours). While Arlo is hiding something, it's also a jab at myself and all starting artists when they hide hands on their characters. :P

In animation this phenomenon is called "side-mouth". It's pretty much a budget/style thing. In a nutshell this requires less animation/knowledge of shapes in space and an animator is literally copy-pasting mouth shapes over static faces. The jaw never moves which is typically the signature of "side-mouthing". This became a bigger thing with cheap, oversea inbetweening and programs that operate like Flash with their library of drag and drop shapes. (Think Southpark, except they're all in-house) There has been creative solutions to hiding the fact, like building a fat library o' mouth shapes in all foreseeable positions- but drag and drop nonetheless.

Also on the left char, what is the skin coming up between the right corner of the mouth and the cheek? Judging from the angle of the face, we should be able to see through the mouth!

You're absolutely right. I have been familiar with why a lot of anime shows do the same thing, for budget costs. I have a couple drawings like your demo, but it's not in full practice yet. I'm trying to figure out when the angle of my character is tilted enough that I forcefully need to avoid side mouth. I am after that disney feature film style after all. :P

Welp, it's a new year, so new designs! Let me just say........Titus got a huge redesign, and he's not exactly a good guy anymore...or maybe his cigarette just tastes bad. :P

Started as a volume/perspective exercise...evolved into this.

I didn't do a LOT different here, but I had to fix that stupid looking face. I think he looks better here, as well as a few body adjustments. I don't necessarily regard this as his "look", but this is what happens when you do volume / anatomy studies and blatantly not draw a human head shape. LOL

I imagine his body shape will be vastly different by the end of the year.
