Grid Animation Challenge 2007-04-28 02:38:12

I've come up with this little idea for a bit of a challenge. Just for some fun, no prizes no winners or anything. Just a small animation challenge.

The Gist
So here's the challenge basically what you do is you get a grid of squares in a flash and frame by frame you can animate things happening, however you have to do it by only filling the squares of the grid separately. I sure hope that makes sense, if not have a look at the sample linked further in this post.

The Specs
Basically you need a flash document default size (550x400). On the page you have a grid of 50x50 squares, there should be 11 across and 8 down. All you can do to animate it is fill each square with different colours. You can use any colours, any frame and any background colour rate just don't go outside the squares.

The Sample
http://denvish.net/ulf/280407/59743_Sample.ph p

Be creative, make it look cool. You could even do it to music if you like.

Don't hang shit on me for starting this topic, this is made for some fun and if you don't wanna participate then don't, I just want to have some extra things to entertain people on these forums. Good luck to anyone who participates.

Great idea. I think if you posted a sample file with the grid already made then that would make people a lot more willing to join...and keep consistency aswell.

Not submitting, this is just a bit of fun, make the thing (if you want to) upload to denvish to show it off to some people then you might get some comments back on it. It's all just for fun.

Haha nice piece man. I'm doing one synced to music and it's kinda longish so could be a day or two.

Snazzy. As other people said, you should finish it, if it stays that good all the way through, it would get a good score.

are we allowed to use gradients? :p

This would be cool idea for a collab with a smaller grid size so theres more opportunity for variety.. it would work well as an abstract music video with parts that naturally melt into each other seamlessly.

Anyway very cool.

I agree, make it more like 10x10 and make the lines transparent :)

On second thoughts 20x20 and you would need the stage 600x400 to fit it

Here it is

Thanks for all the positive comments guys =). I was afraid to post this at first thinking people would just flame me but the response has been good.

To al those saying I should finish my piece and submit, I may do that but I ain't too sure, not much of an animator myself and I fear if I try to finish the song the coolness of it all would drop a bit.

To mooseisloose I think no gradients is better because it keeps to the sort of single sqaure pixel sort of look. If you really want to, I can't stop you.

Nice piece Senti, thanks for taking the time to participate.

To luis and fuzz, that's a good idea I think I just might start up a collab of this, and probably with the demensions suggested because I myself found it really hard to be so limited. I also like your idea luis to make it sort of seamless transitions because that would sort of make it more of a work together collab because personally I hate it when people get song, slice it up, run off in different directions and glue it back together and call it a collab.

Levo42 just keep at it man, the more time and effort you put in the better it will come out.

Cool piece fuzz, that's the 20x20 right? I think this even more makes me want to turn this into a collab. If I can think of a good way to achieve what I mentioned before with the seamless trasitions between pieces I might start this up sometime during the week or next weekend.

Nice contribution pillowbasher, I love the faded trail near the start and the watery thing at the end. The music fit realy well.

Keep em coming kiddos!

For an extra bit of trivia if anyone was wondering where I got this idea it was from watching a stereo with one of those little bar things on it, while music was playing. =)

yeah that was 20x20. Ive a good idea for transitions.. One person starts with a base colour eg. Blue. And the next persons canvas starts blue, then ends whatever colour with variations in the middle and stuff.

Response to Grid Animation Challenge 2007-04-29 06:24:03

Yeah I was just thinking as people signed up they would specify the final colour they would have on the screen, probably best in hex number, and the person who signed up next would start off with that colour. Would you be interested in participating if I did start this?
