Yeah, the title pretty much sums this up. I wasn't going to post about it- I'm not one to make topics about things that happen in my life, but what the hell. Before you say it, this is NOT a parody of Ozcar's topic where he was stabbed with an icepick (or whatever that thing was).
So I was out in Denver downtown on Saturday night with a mate of my mine from Philly. I'd put him in a taxi because he was pretty wasted, and headed off to catch a bus on Broadway (for any of you that may actually know Denver a bit). I was sitting around at the bus stop with another guy, who I was trying to avoid eye contact with because he looked like he wanted to rape me or something, when I saw this couple walking down the sidewalk. (This was all at about 11PM)
They seemed like an ordinary enough pair- the man was pretty drunk judging by the groping going on, and the girl (who was pretty hot by the way), seemed thoroughly pissed off, as I'm sure most ladies are when their man has had a few too many, but other than that normal as two people can be.
In the other direction there is this Hispanic guy (no racism intended, it's just the easiest way to describe him), who was also pretty drunk. Well, very drunk- he was having a hard time walking in a straight line, and seemed to be muttering something under his breath.
As luck would have it the two met each other right in front of the bus stop I was sitting at, the guy next to me now focused upon the nice young lady coming our way. They had a short conversation as they passed, and our Hispanic friend tried to be a little too friendly, as drunk guys often are. The man didn't like it and in not so many words told him to go away, and carried on with his girl.
Now the Hispanic guy was pissed off- he was only trying to be friendly after all, and he started shouting after the couple a load of obscenities, and saying he would thump him if his girl wasn't there. The couple ignored him and carried on walking. This further infuriates the Hispanic guy, and he goes after them, intending to fight the guy after all.
The drunk white guy responds, and a few punches are thrown, while the young lady looks on in horror, screaming at her boyfriend to stop. I was thinking that was going to be it, and was quite enjoying this entertainment while I waited for the bus (I've learnt from experience that it's best to just let two drunk people fight it out than get involved).
Well, out of nowhere the Hispanic guy lets out a half yelp, half grunt, and starts to stagger/run away. I hadn't realised what happened at first, but looking back at the first man I see a knife in his hand with very definite blood on it. In real life a stabbing is very fast, and looks little more than a couple of punches- if I hadn't seen the knife and the blood I'd have thought he simply hit him.
I don't know what happened to the Hispanic guy- he disappeared off with blood on his shirt, while the couple walked off in the other direction. No doubt that guy got dumped later that night.
So yeah, there's my little tale. No real point to it, I just felt like posting something. Note, you can tell this is for real, as there are no Fresh Prince references at the end here. No cabs, no Bel Air, no nothing.
So has anyone else been a witness to a violent crime of this sort? Do you guys carry around knives etc as protection in cities? I'm a Brit living over here and the amount of violent crime in the US surprises me a lot, despite growing up near some less than pleasant areas South of London. I witnessed a robbery on a bus in Bath in the UK last year admittedly, although that was much less interesting- I did have to give police statements and shit that time though.
And yeah, it's a long post, get over it.
