I've released an initial version of my new program, which I'm called NG User Search (NGUS). This little beauty combines Google, NG BBS, and NG Portal searches to make finding users easier. It's an early version, so it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that I plan on adding eventually. Just wanted to see what you guys think. You can download it at http://ng.jfsoftware.com/ngus.html

Next best thing to an actual NG User search on Newgrounds!

Hey, if your this good, you should hang around the programming forum sometimes, I've never seen you there and there aren't many of us as it is =-<

Scroll down to the bottom of that page, at the very bottom it says 'NG User Search download page', click that link.

Then when that page loads there's a Windows Update you have to download if you haven't got it already.

Finally, at the very bottom of that page it says 'Download Program: ngus.zip (15 KB)'.

Click where it says 'ngus.zip (15 KB)' to download the programme.

Well, I've got the program set to search Google first. A lot of profiles are listed by Google, but there's still quite a few that aren't, and the program resorts to doing BBS and Portal searches.

Oh, and another thing, Wade isn't going to go mental over this, is he?

I don't see why he should. There's nothing automated about this program; in fact, this program does exactly what I would do if I wanted to find someone's profile.

Yeah, I've bounced in there a few times a while back. I got my big NG start in this forum, though (namely, my NGLister program), so I've kinda hung around here most of the time.

Heh, yeah, my site's still running on Javascript. I've just been too lazy to convert it to PHP/SQL. I should probably do that sometime...>_>

Looks like that could be a pretty useful tool. I doubt I'll have much of a use for it myself but it's a welcome addition.

Did you suddenly get bored? But i can assume that this program is flawless, since it's YOU of all programmers who made it. I will download it....

Okay, version 0.2 is out. I've added a built-in experience calculator; click the "View More Information" button to access this feature. Click that button again to show the options/about panels. Download it at http://www.jfsoftware.com/ng/ngus.html

At 1/6/06 10:15 PM, Kam-Ron wrote: I won't use it much if at all, but I guess it will shorten the search for users. I was thinking thought if someone doesn't get the name exactly right it won't show up. Maybe show possible results on the next version.

I would love to do partial searches, but Google and NG are too picky. They only return exact matches, so I'm kinda stuck with what I've got, unfortunately.

This might pose a problem for you...hypens.

I've already tested searching for the names "Super" and "Kam". The first was just me being bored checking names; the second was me verifying my assumption. It seems if you enter in part of the name of some people which is broken by hypens you'll get that person instead of whoever would normally have that alias. You might want to look into that.

Works great. The added auto-experience calculator is a very nifty feature, and this site really needed a user search.

Oh SK and his many computery doohickies. Nice job, bud.

Stupid Google went and threw me a curveball. Turns out when you search "Personal Profile: super" (with the quotation marks!), it returns the profile for -super-sandwich-.......so I've fixed that. And I found a little bug that made the options and about disappear if you performed a failed search. And I added Audio Portal search, for finding those people that only submit audio stuff. So yeah, version 0.2.5 is out now. Get it at http://www.jfsoftware.com/ng/ngus.html

Good stuff but I got a question. What order does the searches go by? NG BBS, NG Portal, Audio, and then Google?

Too bad Google doesn't allow wildcard searches. altavista.com supposedly does wildcard searches, but it doesn't seem to work for me.

Nope, it goes in the order they appear in the Options list: Google, NG BBS, NG Portal, then NG Audio.

Certainly a cool application. I as well don't have much use for it but I might check it out and play around with it a bit.

Also whoever suggested Wade might go apeshit shouldn't worry about it. You'd have to have thousands of people all search at the same time with this program and not return a result through google in order to actually do anything remotely taxing to Newground's database.

Something tells me that won't happen anytime ever.

Well, I'll have to rework that experience calculator, for one. I don't really like the way I've built it in (I was originally planning on adding a VP calculator too, but the numbers get quite complicated for predicting future VP). Also, I'm thinking of making the program track statistics over time; each time you pull up a person's profile, it'll store the current numbers and show change over time.

Response to NG User Search 2006-01-07 18:35:09

The "View More Information" functionality doesn't work for me, BTW. When I search for any user, the tool reports the wrong number of XP - for myself, I get "5" (instead of 4730, currently), for pimp, I get 22, for WadeFulp, I get 9, and so on - in other words, about 1/1000th of the actual value.

To make a guess, could this be because I'm not using an English version of windows? The meaning of "," and "." in number is switched around, here, compared to how it's handled in English; in other words, you'd write "four thousand and one fifth" as "4.005,2" instead of "4,005.2", so my assumption is that the program parses things like "4,730" on the info page as "four dot seven three" instead of "four thousand seven hundred and thirty".

The solution would be to hardcode it to always use ",", as that's what NG uses. :) It'd be nice to see this in the next version...

Awesome, only one problem I noticed:

searched main account (this one), checked "Desired Level" and it worked fine, but then checked alt account (level 1), and "Desired Level" kept increasing only by 50 exp - even after level 9 where that ceases, so for level 29 it was only like 120 days or so. Might want to check that out - into <level 9 accounts.

Anyway great stuff, good job.

Okay, I've made a few changes and released version 0.3. I fixed a few experience calculator problems, fixed the kill switch, added a Reset button (in case the kill switch doesn't work right and your NG search options are disabled, hit Reset to reset them), fixed the profile puller, and added some links to the More Information section. Get it at http://www.jfsoftware.com/ng/ngus.html

You know, I hadn't even thought of that. Shoot, I'll just remove the comma from the thing before I convert it to a number. That'll fix it.

Sorry dude. I'm making do with the tools I have available. Normally, if I wanted to do something like this, I'd do it NGTL-style: run through every profile and record every name. But I'm not allowed to do that anymore, according to Wade and his pet FBI.

Heh, silly me. I switched a couple of variables in the experience calculator. Too many numbers and variables... >_< Anyway, it's fixed now.
